My Chihuahua has Apoquel. Started off with a 2 week high dose as Edie Ray said to get the symptoms under control, then basically our vet was keen to reduce the dose until they are on the minimum dose needed to control the itching? It doesn't cure the problem, but deals with the symptoms. It's an expensive drug but does really work!

Just a quick update to those that replied. Took Bill to his first appointment today at the new vets. What a total difference. Bill is terrified of the vets normally. We were in the consulting room 40 mins. She was calm professional and made me feel like she was really listening. She left Bill to his own devices he had a nervous poop (mortified!) Carried on talking while cleaning up. Bill fell asleep briefly and sat by her feet at the end of the consultation. We've come away with the start of a new option to try based on how difficult his ears are to handle and the increased allergy symptoms. As dibbers recommended we have apoquel tablets to try. If that doesn't do the trick for quality of life he could then stay on low dose steroid. We may at some point have to irrigate his ears. The way she explained why didnt make it sound like a way of charging a hefty fee and not helping the problem long term. It's more after trial of tablets the ear wash would be having a good clean a thorough examination and starting his ears with a clean slate so to speak. She was an amazing vet why I haven't changed before I have no clue. Fingers crossed this helps.

Finding the right vet is so hard...but it sounds like Bill is on the right track now. 🙂

Springer hugs.

Brilliant! I changed vets about 5 years ago and couldnt believe the difference either!

Really hope Apoquel tablets work for Bill like they do for my Freddie 🤞.

Hes had his first dose not sure if I am hoping it's working but hes definitely not biting scratching shuffling as much. Just put himself in the crate chilling.

What a beautiful boy! 😍 I hope the new medication works for him. I have ear problems myself, so I sympathise with him.
Keep us updated!

Our wire fox terrier had allergies, different vets offered different ideas, none of which worked.
After trying everything I happened on the easiest and cheapest option.
We wiped him down with a damp cloth, every part of him , nose, paws, belly to tail, after every visit outside. It worked. No more excessive licking, red belly or biting his paws.
Amazing and such a relief. Worth a try!
