We drove through the Surrey Hills a couple of years ago (major accident near Gatwick and Waze took us the scenic route ). I didn't realise it was so nice down there. Seriously beyond our budget though

Ours is a two bed, ex-council mid terrace in Shropshire (was three beds, but we knocked the two smaller bedrooms together to make a nice big one for when DD got back from uni and then she moved out).

Worth about £120k now, still paying the mortgage New builds start at around the same price for a small 2 bed flat or £135k for a house with a garden smaller than our decking.

We bought ours 15 years ago. It was originally a 2 bed detached bungalow. We’ve done 4 lots of building work over the years:

1. Loft conversion to add 2 rooms upstairs
2. Built a detached double garage in the front garden
3. Converted the original attached garage into 2 bedrooms
4. Just finished an extension off the kitchen with a new dining room, utility and office

The mortgage will be paid off next month. We joke that when the kids are grown up and left, we’ll be rattling around the place. Downstairs we now have 3 bedrooms (including 1 en-suite); 3 reception rooms; office; kitchen; utility and bathroom. Upstairs we have 2 rooms which could be bedrooms, but one we’ve got as a den and the other as an odds and sods room.

No idea on value, but looking at prices at least £350k. We’re in Worcestershire.

We live in a 3 bed semi detached house in the rural Highlands. We rent from our local housing association at a price of £400 per month.

We've never been interested in buying a house for some reason.

Two bed tiny terraced house in Surrey. Others recently sold by us for around £375,000. Both bedrooms have en-suites and we have a downstairs cloakroom. There’s only the two of us here.

We did look to move to bigger and increase our mortgage a few years ago, but most people looking at ours were downsizing so we decided to stay put and enjoy life.

I’m 53 and mortgage free now.

We have lovely holidays, are luckily enough to just buy anything if we want it and both have nice cars.

A lot of people we know have interest only mortgages and are banking on their property prices increasing enough to enable them to move to smaller and hopefully be mortgage free in the end. It’s the only way they can have houses big enough for their families now without paying silly money in rent.

We are in our first home that we bought in our early 20s. Nearly five years later and we are still very happy here. We are in East Anglia, in a not so cheap area - I wanted to stay here as I was born in this town and have all our family near. We live in a mid-terraced but it is nice and spacious for us with 3 double bedrooms. I am obsessed with money-saving (with the exception of spending on Disney holidays), and our aim is to carry on overpaying our mortgage as much as we can.. I don't like having the debt! Love the idea of being a homeowner and having no mortgage
