Sadly Florida isn't likely to join the list of places banning or charging for single use plastic bags anytime soon. Osceola County didn't even have curbside recycling until a few years ago. There was actually a bill proposed to ban individual communities from bringing in local ordinances against plastic bags etc. I am not sure of the result but it wouldn't surprise me if it passed.

Aldi charge for bags and Publix try and encourage the use of reusable ones but it is the norm to receive far too many flimsy disposable ones here still.

It is a shame.
Years ago (at least 15), when staying at my aunts house in New Jersey, she told us we had to sort our rubbish into separate classes/containers, eg, paper, bottles, cans, plastics etc or the trash men wouldn’t take any of it until sorted correctly.
When renting in Florida, we’ve asked owners whether we need to sort our condo trash; the answer is still that no, all goes in the same chute/dumpster.

The down I lived in for 40+years did not have trash pick up but we have long had recycling. INitially, you would sort and place items in separate bins at the dump. They have since upgraded to single stream recycling so you do not have to sort-just not put thin plastic in. It's so easy. You just have a bin for recycles and one for trash (there are also a reuse house, yard waste corner and several places to leave appliances and a place to pick up mulch). Some people still throw everything out.

The sign at the dump exit keeps tabs on how much trash didn't go into the landfill and how much money the town has saved that fiscal year. While it is a relatively small town, the savings were in millions.

When Osceola County changed their bins last year, they said that glass now isn't recycled and goes in the normal rubbish bins

On our last day we go to Publix and put the bags in the bins outside also the egg boxes we have collected over the holiday

Might buy a couple of the reuseable bags

Did have a lovely freezer bag at the villa which we used to take to the supermarkets but when we went in September it had disappeared

I was saving glass until I could find somewhere to recycle it but there really isn't anywhere that takes it here. Apparently it was contaminating the mixed recycling stream when it broke and just isn't economical to recycle in Florida as there aren't any plants. You would think they could build one in such a big state. The problem is partly that landfill is still cheap here.

we usually buy the reusable ones on the first visit then use them throughout the holiday - bring them home and use them here too! Cheap souvenirs!
