Cricket Back On Track

The only real entertainment we used to have on a weekend was watching our youth play cricket (budding county player). Today I have been down to one of his old clubs to help set up temporary nets on the outfield to enable practice for the kids to commence. The government has said net sessions can commence but a lot of local leagues and committees are against it (I’ll let you decided on the age demographic of these committees). Luckily the chairman of this club is a forward/positive thinking guy (and a barrister)and has introduced a set of procedures which ensures we can move forward in a safe manner - I doff my cap to this chap

Extract from the ECB

And the recreational game?

The ECB says competitive recreational cricket remains suspended until further notice, but there is some good news in the shape of limited practice now being permitted in England, subject to strict guidelines.

Net sessions can take place in groups of no more than two people, unless it is exclusively with members of your own household.

One-on-one coaching is allowed and clubhouses can be opened for access to things like first-aid equipment and toilets.

However, communal areas must remain closed, the sharing of equipment is discouraged and indoor practice is not allowed.

Senior leagues up and down the country are considering their options if some cricket is able to be played later in the summer. They include the scrapping of promotion and relegation, banning overseas professionals, and the formation of new competitions unique to this year.

There is also the suggestion that junior cricket should be given priority over adult matches to ensure children do not drift away from the game because of a year of inactivity

My club's chairman reacted at the speed of light when the ECB made this announcement and we have been holding 1-2-1 coaching sessions since last Saturday. Luckily we have enough room (and coaches) for three people to have a session at the same time, so each Saturday we managed to have sessions for 9 kids and we are managing to provide sessions for 4 kids per evening during the week. The kids and their parents have been really grateful for them so far and the sessions I ran yesterday were certainly the most fun I have had since we've been on lockdown.

My son is captain of our local team and was on this like Flynn! They've been using the nets for a week now. People book a slot and it's working really well. Some of the 'old guard' got snarky about it but all the social distancing rules are being adhered to. The kids are loving it.

Great news maiden 50 is always the best, wait till he’s county it’s over night stays all your holidays taken up but worth it, my DD played County level from 13 no County games this year and it would have been her last at U17 but thankfully other games.

Bang and then it all comes to and end - broken thumb in first over of an under 15's match whilst wicket keeping. To be fair to the lad he's got some nuts as he kept wicket for another 17 overs and then opened the batting to score 30 (RTNO) and finished the season as leading run scorer for under 15's in Lincolnshire. Hand is now in a cast for 4 weeks and then physio - should be ready for winter nets the beginning of November
