Anyone had an Esophagectomy Operation?

Just wondering if anyone has ever had, or knows anyone, who has had an Esophagectomy Operation. Our dear neighbour has cancer in her esophagus and is due to have this operation on Monday. She is elderly but is in really good health otherwise.

I'm wondering how we will be able to help her when she comes out of hospital. She has her daughters who will be staying but we want to help as well especially as they don't live too near to us.

Sorry I do not know anything about this operation but just wanted to say how very kind caring neighbours you must be

It is so nice to know there are people out there who still care about their older neighbours

Hope someone can give you the advice you need but meanwhile...

Thank You for your kindness I'm sure the lady next door must be feeling very fortunate indeed to have such great neighbours!

She won't be 'allowed' to do any heavy lifting including hoovering, carrying shopping bags etc for minimum 6-12 weeks - don't know if she's still driving, but she won't be allowed to do that either.

Any other restrictions will depend on whether she's having it done laparoscopically (with the little cameras & small holes) or as an open surgery - which is a much bigger operation & has a much longer recovery!

Good luck to her! & I'm sure any help offered will be much appreciated!

Thank you. I think she's having the open surgery and will be in Intensive care for 5 days and been told in hospital for at least 2 weeks.

We'll be able to do her shopping and take her any where she wants. I just didn't know if she would even be able to make herself a cup of tea.

You could have a look at the MacMillan website - as well as factual info they also have forums which you might find useful.

This cancer is a terrible thing.

My dad had this operation he had been having chemo before it so was probably weaker anyway he couldnt do very much initially but was able to make tea. The biggest issue for him was wounds not closing so district nurses in every day. I know his neighbours made dinners etc. I was in Scotland he was in England and it was lovely and reassuring to know they were looking out for him. One thing was useful was getting his neighbours phone numner it meant she could phone me and if i was worried i phoned her. Unfortunately my dads op wasnt successful and he passed xx. Nice to see caring from others xx

So sorry to hear about your Dad. Our neighbour doesn't have the option of chemo and only limited radiotherapy so she has opted for the operation.
