Okay...here's one for you, pre DVD camcorder, I had (and still have) a Sharp Viewcam miniDV VL-NZ50... blumin great camera. Now... I have about 5 years worth of tapes which I have put onto vhs video (although I still have all the DV tapes) I want to get them onto DVD. I have a few program packages to do this (X-OOM Video2DVD & WinDVD and some Magix packages) - Luckily, I work in the games industry and PC industry and i got these for free, my issue is getting the data on to the PC. The viewcam has 2 plug sockets, one is a video jack plug to the red, yellow, white (plugs you plug into a tele or video), this is lead I have and the other is a DVfirewire socket. My lappy has a firewire socket too, it say's s400 on it. The burning program is easy to use, but do you know exactly what cable I need to transfer data? Is it this one - cgi.ebay/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MEWA%3AIT&rd=1 Hope you can help again? c |

It depends on the connectors on both ends. Normally laptops use the smaller type of firewire socket, and so do camcorders (as per the eBay item you have described) but it's worth checking before you buy. If you're at all unsure, take both items into a local PC shop and get them to check what you need. Hopefully you won't need drivers this time, but you never know!

ok!
you obviously have 2 options. 1) Video capture:- you could buy a usb 2.0 video capturer that has a yellow composite(phono/rca) connector input for the video feed. The audio will connect to the sound card line input using a 2 phono to 3.5mm headphone jack. expensive way to do it for copying only a few dv tapes! 2) Firewire :- the link you list for the firewire cable is fine if your laptop has the same connector as the camcorder. This is a 4 pin to 4 pin lead. however you may have a 6 pin connector on your laptop. this is a pic of a 4 pin to 6 pin cable s400 means it can transfer up to 400 Megabits per second |
