Lens wise, I run a 18-55 and a 70-300... The latter is pretty much on my camera 99% of the time because I shoot in the zoo mainly.
Around the parks your kit lens (the 18-55) is going to be just fine for landscape shots, buildings and so on. The long lens is handy in Busch for example... Extra weight to carry, admittedly. |

True to an extent, but it has been shown that no matter the camera an understanding of light, shutter speeds etc etc helps. Also in this age there appears to be very very few people actually print out large pictures for albums/frames etc, perhaps the odd one, but experts etc reckon some 98% of pictures taken are only ever viewed on screen, wether it be shared via social networks or on line albums. Thus making the expense of a DSLR compared with the best of compacts or bring cameras, not a waste of money, but perhaps an overindulgence. Then there are the up coming compact system cameras, these produce as good as SLR results, but again only really if printed for a good sized frame etc.
Then of course comes the lenses ! a minefield, but the general rule is the ones included and cheaper ones do not produce as good results as the good glass ones, obvious really. But I have seen and heard so many people express a big disappointment in the pictures they see from their uber pricey kit, when in reality they just set it to auto and carry on ! Photography is actually a complex science in composing and understating effects of light etc, and IMO a lot of fun and that wonderful feeling when you get a photo you are delighted with, but may fall short in a critiques eye. The best camera of course is always the one you have with you regardless of its size etc
