As a Scot and someone who loves football, it pains me to say that I think England could do it this year, Foden and Kane for me are the match winners. Bellingham, he’s a mercurial talent BUT, I think his performance levels too and fro, especially whilst when he was at Dortmund. Yes, he’s had a great season in Madrid BUT, club and International football is completely different and I think, at times, Bellingham has pulled on the three lions and just expected the team to win, just like at Madrid.

In terms of Southgate, there is no doubt he has got England playing at a consistently high level of performance for a number of years now. Previous England managers, in the past 30 yrs have never been able to get the team playing so consistently.

However, is he a manager who can navigate and tactically out think and out fox another manager?
I’m not sure, any team who is going to win a major trophy needs a manager who outthinks and will believe in changing things in order to upset the opposition.
I think it’s Englands players who’ve shown up time and again, with Southgate having done thorough research on opponents but I can’t recall an England game where tactically you could see the managers stamp on the game.
It’s as if he’s playing “league” games at times.
“This is how we play and I’m not changing for anyone…”

Look at the International Managers who’ve won tournaments with teams who weren’t favorites.
Greece, Portugal, Germany and most recently Argentina.
The managers of these teams outthought their counterparts with teams that had one or two good/great individual players but at every stage of the tournament tactics were instrumental to the teams progression
England have a handful of great players….and have done so for a number of years now but s Southgate a manager who isn’t afraid to make changes and take responsibility?

Great post.

The FA have always picked safely it’s more important that they have someone who is firstly a yes man and secondly not going to do anything controversial on or off the pitch. I would have like pd to have seen Harry Redknapp as England manager but too much of a risk in what he may say.

Southgate is risk adverse and I think should have done better with the players available to him.

You have nit the mail in the head about Bellingham I have had “discussions” with friends over him,it’s ok to have hot and cold players in a long season but not over a short tournament.

To win he needs to change tactics and surprise the opposition, the area where we have the highest level of talent is midfield pack it play offensively here and scare the living daylights out of defenders.

I've silently disagreed with a few things on here but there's one thing I can't let go...

Jude Bellingham is a generational talent and Madrid pushing forward into the number ten position has only accelerated that.

This is the Bundesliga player of the season 22/23 and the La Liga player is the season 23/24. He is literally the first name on the team sheet for both club and country and he's only turning 21 this year.

No - 2 reasons

1) Our defence will get found out against the top teams.

2) The further we get, the more defensive Southgate will go - see 1) above.

Couldn't agree more, I believe he is the best all round player in the world already.

This is exactly what my friends have said to me one of which feeling he needed to call another friend to show how stupid I was and proving I know nothing about football, he probably has a point 😁

Completely agree... defence is horrendous. I expect we will go into the first game now with Stones and Dunk as a starting CB pair

Selfishly I’m pleased Branthwaite has been dropped

Will be Stones and Guehi.

Questions are will Shaw be fit, there have been more optimistic noises coming from the camp, and who plays alongside Rice. I suspect Mainoo.
