What should I wear to my son's graduation?

My son is due to graduate soon and I have no idea of what I should wear for the day. I know it should be smart but not sure how smart? I don't want to go overdressed but am also worried about being underdressed.

If anyone can give me some ideas or pics of what they wore for their son/daughter's graduation that would be great

I’ve bought a dress for the occasion (Leila style from Bravissimo, which, having seen parents at graduation in the uni where I work is entirely appropriate to the occasion. hubby and DS2 will wear suits, as will the graduating DS. Hope that helps. Also, if you look at photos or videos of the crowd at previous graduations (most unis have videos) you will get an idea.

Thanks, my hubby and son are planning on wearing suits it's just myself that I'm unsure about. I didn't think about looking at the uni website for previous graduations, I had a quick look on google images but didn't really see much so will give that a go thanks.

I wore a lovely Hobbs top with a pair of very smart trousers, both DH & DS wore suits.
It was a very rainy very windy November day though for DS’s graduation 👨≈🎓
There were some families there dressed very down too in jeans and t shirts.
For me it was a very special day and I wanted us all to be dressed nicely and the photos look good 👍

Jane 😁

At my DDs graduation last year, most parents were ‘smart’, many gents were in suits, DH was more smart casual but didn’t look out of place. To be honest, you will just be sat in the audience You might want to consider what you want to look at in the photos for the next 20 years? I went for a simple and comfortable dress that’s I’d worn the previous week to youngest DDs DoE Gold award at Buckingham Palace- both days were sweltering hot, and the dress was quite light but still smart I thought.

Just to add - My DD purposefully chose a dress that would stand out under her gown, and I must admit it did look nice - and easy to spot walking across the stage so that might be something for graduates to consider.

I came on here for a nose of nice clothes and suddenly dawned on me that my son will graduate this year too so it applies to me! His ceremony isn't til October though so I've got time. Haven't worn a dress in years so need to get thinking!

Looking forward to more ideas while I panic!
