We went to Universal last August. Stayed at RPR to make use of the passes and thought they were great. Didnt queue longer then 15 mins for anything and got to ride what we wanted multiple times.
We stayed there from 10th to 15th of August.

I wouldnt say so. Apart from Diagon alley it was fine to walk around and look round the shops etc. We plan on going at the same time next year too.

We were there last August, no passes, got on most things pretty quickly, didn't make it onto Hagrid, but apart from that. Our trip did coincide with the first day of the star wars opening at WDW, not sure if that made much difference.

We usually go last two weeks of August - with express passes it’s very manageable. Minimal queueing! Without express passes, 45-60 min queues for popular rides.
Deffo do a hotel night to get the passes!

I have been lucky enough to have visited Florida last 3 wks in August the last few times of visiting as I work in a school , sometimes the weather is inclement- but parks etc are normally fine - especially after the American children rerun to school

No need for passes in my opinion towards the end of August. Save the £300 hotel bill and spend it in the gift shop😀

We also found it got noticeably quieter once the schools locally went back. We has FOLP due to hotel but could have easily done it without them.
