Top tips for choosing a car
Hello, I am looking for some top tips when choosing a hire car. Do's and don'ts and anything to look out for. I am presuming the least miles and less wear and tear are the things to go for but what do you look for when choosing your hire car?
Thanks |

First of all I'm assuming that you are hiring from someone like Alamo at MCO where you can actually choose your car?
If so the easiest thing to check is the mileage as that will give you some idea of how new the car is. Secondly look for paintwork damage near the boot. Age and multiple lettings will have caused chipping with loading luggage. Mick

First Contact andy at dfch, then chose alamo, then what i do is walk down the line, being not a fussy person grab the first thing that nobody is sitting in. This years happened to be a ford kuga, my 2019 dacia duster is better than what im driving infact my first car was a mk1 1100L ford escort ,and im sure it was nicer than this kuga.
👍😂🤣

if you can pick your car
first of all, know your car categories. There is a break down of the make and models you can expect (maybe a bit outdated but you'll get the idea) You can find that in the stickies at the top of this forum knowing what you have booked, and knowing the category up and the category down from yours, will allow you to immediatly spot free upgrades (category up) or if they placed a lower category car in your row for lack of space then for the car itself, have a look at the rear of the car before even opening the doors first of all, as was said, scratch marks on the lower part of the boot means that this car has seen many a suitcase ... then a quick look at the license plate. you will see a sticker with a month and a date we're in september 19, if you see a car where the sticker says August 20 this means that this car is one month old or less. (or 11 months old, but you'll then be able to tell from the mileage) if it reads january 20 it means that this car was added to the inventory 9 months ago that's how you can tell the car's age then, of course, the mileage, the bells and whistles inside, and ... the color ... yes it can also be a criteria :p |

I pick the cheapest airport supplier and then pick nicest looking one and if it has a problem I change it for another one. This simple system has served me well for 100s of rentals over the years. Only had to take 1 back for a mechanical problem (Hertz) and 1 flat tyre with no spare (Alamo)

As long as the car is in the class that I have paid for I'm not too precious about it. I don't care about the mileage as long as it has been properly valeted and everything works.

Pretty much the same for both car rental and hotel rooms:
Did I get what I paid for? Does it carry out the function I require it for? Have the remnants of the last person to rent it been cleaned off it? Job Jobbed - Lets get on the real reason I'm on holiday. To me too many people spend too much time on the niff naff and triv. Is my flight full? Is it a Dreamliner? How do I get to sit in the bubble? What must I do to ensure I do everything humanly possible in 1 holiday? Edited at 01:44 PM. |

The colour of the car is always one of my main choices.
