Getting to know the DIBB
|
Itin
Hi, I'm selling my points and looking in to claiming back the FIRPTA. This is the advice we have been given about this
n order to obtain an ITIN for you, I will need to review documentation that verifies your identity and your non-U.S. status. The preferable document is a certified copy of your passport, which MUST be certified by (1) the issuing agency, (2) the embassy or consulate office of the country where the passport was issued or (3) the U.S. embassy or consulate office. The certified copy of the passport may not be certified by a notary public or a lawyer or by anyone other than the three offices listed above. Please obtain the certified copy of your passport as soon as possible and send it to me via overnight delivery. After I have received the certified passport, I will need to interview you via FaceTime, Skype, or other means so that I may verify the information needed to file for the ITIN. We will set up that interview after I get the certified passport since I am required to have the actual certified passport in my possession at the time of the interview. Rather than getting a certified copy of their passports, some clients simply choose to send me their original passport, which I retain through the interview and then send back to the client. This is the simplest way to resolve the identification issue if you do not want to obtain certified copies and will certainly expedite the process. Does anyone know how/where to obtain a certified copy or did you send your actual passports? I would be grateful for any advice you can give me. Cheryl |

Why does it have to be certified by just these bodies? Who is doing it? What is the ‘non preferable’ option?

I didn't have to get a certified copy of my passport, I'd give that tax agent a miss and use one of the ones recommended on this thread

We didn't have to get certified copies of our passports when obtaining ITINs in 2014.
We used Nancy Carpenter who is one recommended in the post above.
