Uber stripped of London licence
Uber stripped of London licence after after Transport for London states it's not a ‘fit and proper’ operator.

Ridiculous decision driven by the black cab drivers losing their monopoly.
To be fair, as a company, they have some shortcomings, but I personally feel a lot safer getting into an Uber cab, where there is a record of where I was and who picked me up - and what route was taken - than I am by getting into a much more expensive black cab.

I believe they can carry on working until an appeal is heard.

I am gutted. We live in central london (canary wharf) so we do not have a car and there are times where I don't want to / can't use the tube. I would always pick an Uber over any other type of taxi. This has nothing to do with black cabs being more expensive at all, I am happy to pay for a service, but I feel so much safer in an Uber. I can see how far away it is, I know the name of the driver, I know his car type and number plate and the car is trackable. I can send my partner the details just in case anything happens. With a black cab you don't get this.
Not to mention I don't even have to do anything to pay, it does it all automatically! They have 21 days to appeal, and I hope that they are successful!

I've used Uber and find it fine. However London is not an isolated incident as far as the company is concerned. It's been banned in some countries and is under investigation in the US over its use of technology to circumvent the work of regulators.
I strongly suspect that during the appeals process, and any legal action, they'll make the changes necessary to keep their licence. They've had a lot of poor publicity recently and they don't need this. |

This is why I like Addison Lee, ok they're not as cheap as uber but you can track your vehicle/driver and they text you when they arrive.
I'm afraid I don't tend to use uber as they don't fully background check their drivers (I often travel alone) but I can see why others like them |

TfL said that it had rejected the company’s application to renew its licence because “Uber’s approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility” in relation to reporting serious criminal offences, obtaining medical certificates and driver background checks.
The licensing body also said it was concerned by Uber’s use of Greyball, software that can be used to block regulatory bodies from gaining full access to its app and undertaking regulatory or law enforcement duties. People may feel safe but then Uber are not releasing the relevant information I do not drive a black cab but in London in can take five years of unpaid work to get your badge/license and then earn a decent living. Uber have dumbed down this and charge cheap rates until something goes wrong , i.e terrorist attacks they put there prices up metro/2017/06/04/uber-s...ttack-6683200/ I will not miss a company like this Rob Edited at 01:30 PM. You do realise the surge pricing is determined by an automatic computer algorithm? It wasn't a conscious decision to increase it when the incident happened and they removed it as soon as they were alerted.
Honestly I'm not buying the passenger safety line. TFL don't give two hoots about passenger safety when they're trying to remove the number of staff in the tube stations. This is the black cab lobby money talking. Instead of looking at why people go to Uber (surprise, you're too expensive), they've gone this route to protect their own pockets with their obscenely high fares. How many people are going to walk/get the bus now if uber is gone? Is that not more of a risk to safety? |

I live in Birmingham, but am now anxious that there could be a similar outcome here in time. The number of times I have been out and about at night and called a local taxi firm to book a cab and them say it was on its way, only to chase it up 20 minutes later and them admit nothing was dispatched. All the drivers I talk to working for uber used to work for local firms but have jumped ships as they find Uber a much better company to work for. However, it sounds like some changes are needed, and hopefully TfL have taken this approach primarily to shake them into action...
