How do I install an operating system
Hi all, I have been given a laptop and I want to install an operating system on it after putting in a new hard drive.. What is the cheapest & easiest way to put an operating system on it? Is there some where I can download an operating system and burn it to a disc then simply put the disc in the lappy & install it? (I believe it previously ran win 10) Any help appreciated, tia, Ted

If you want windows operating system.then you would need to buy it usually on a DVD. If you want to install a Linux system you should be able to download and burn a disc or use a bootable USB stick if the laptop supports it.

Find the Label on laptop and see what operating system was originally installed, and hopefully it also has the validation key for authenticating the software licence.
If it has this, then you should be able to download the Operating Sytem, and load it to a usb drive or cd and load into the system. microsoft/en-gb/soft...d/windows10ISO Windows will load the required drivers, but possibly laptop manufacturer may have better drivers. Windows update will be required after install, and anti virus.

If it has previously run windows 10 then you won’t need a key. Microsoft now store the validation against the unique ID of the laptop their end. So if you reinstall windows 10 it will revalidate automatically.

That’s interesting to know Simon, what does it use for the unique laptop ID, cpu serial number or something?
Ted, an SSD is a great choice for a hard drive, 256 gbyte min I would say, I used this in my Sony Caio I got from my son and made big difference. I forgot about windows media creator for bootable usb, this page has link techadvisor/how-to...ws-10-3535423/

So I have just looked at the lappy and it WAS running Pro Windows 8 and has no windows sticker with an id on it. Thanks for the info so far, much appreciated.

You can download Windows 10 from the Microsoft website which is free.
microsoft/en-gb/soft...d/windows10ISO You need to put this on a memory stick and there are plenty of help pages to do this. I then purchased a Windows 10 key from eBay.. There are plenty of suppliers on there.

What are you using it for? Linux Mint is free and a doddle if it's just general use.

I wouldn't touch a Windows key bought of eBay with a barge pole... save yourself the trouble and buy one from a legitimate supplier.
