Okinawa
Hello dibbers
We are looking at spending around 5-6 days in Okinawa next year when we visit Hong Kong and Tokyo and wondered if anybody had been? We are a family of 4 and our daughters are 15 and 10. I would love to know what time of year people have been and if there is much to do around the Okinawa area. The beaches and sea look absolutely amazing which is why we're looking at visiting there but would love to know if anybody has done HK and Tokyo and added another beach holiday on the end. Thanks in advance xxx |

Hi, I wanted to do Tokyo and Okinawa as it looks absolutely amazing! It's truly like the Hawaii of Japan lol! What put a stop to it for me was the price to get there. To put it into context though, I got a glitch ticket for just over £300 each and to go to go to Okinawa was about 800ish. Even with that obstacle, It appears a car is needed to get around and I don't really drive, so I was a bit put off, if I found a deal though and didn't have to drive, I'd be off like a shot But, if you can go, go! It is wonderful. You can get discounted airfares :
tokyocheapo/travel/tokyo-to-okinawa/ I found this is a good resource. Also the guy on youtube that does Abroad in Japan, did a day in Okinawa too. It looks so good there, you can't fail to enjoy it |

Thanks Happytraveller, I've found some pretty good prices through skyscanner on a dummy run I've done. The prices have changed quite considerably every day mind you!
Funnily enough we have also looked at Hawaii but that is much more expensive unfortunately. I'll check out Tokyocheapo thank you, that looks very interesting 😀 |

Okinawa tourist figures are topping those of Hawaii. It's also becoming popular as a cruise ship destination. Don't miss the Naminoue shrine, Toyosaki seaside park and Gokoku-ji historic Buddhist temple and cemetery.
One tip: If you have tattoos - cover them with a T shirt etc. In Japan tattoos are seen as part of gang culture and should not be on view in public places. Edited at 08:54 AM. |

Easiest way is fly there from Tokyo Narita. Fares are really cheap. E.g. ¥6,597 (US$61) one way to Naha.
Haven't been to Okinawa yet but it is on our list. i know about it because I've done the research. Something to think about - The main hub of the Yaeyama islands and 250 miles from Okinawa proper, Ishigaki is an even more idyllic area—full of beaches, coral-filled seas and a national park. Ishigaki is popular enough to have its own airport, meaning you can fly direct from Tokyo, or from Naha in Okinawa. Unfortunately, the connecting ferry service was discontinued in 2008.
