getting off in nassau
hi, just wondered from any of you cruisers who have been to nassau, wether there is anywhere to go close to the ship on port? we arnt planning on touring around nassau because of all the warnings etc, so plan on spending the day on board, but we feel it might be nice just to touch land so to speak to say wev actually set foot in the bahamas lol. is there a sign or anything we can go stand under for pic or anything, maybe a nice little walk somewhere before we hit all the locals? are there any shops or anywhere to buy a drink along the portside to sit for 5? or should we abandon this idea altogether?

In regards to hitting locals there is the port building and as soon as you cross over they are there waiting!

I can understand the desire to use the facilities on the ship if it is only a 3/4 day cruise. However, on the several visits we've made to Nassau we've always got off and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We've been out to a beach resort, done a self guided historical walking tour and just wandered round.
We found the people to be polite and courteous, especially on the local buses. I don't get the 'before we hit the locals' comments - yes there are people around the port who will pester you to sell a tour or visit a shop, etc, but a no thank you with a smile works. Move beyond the area around the port and it's totally different. JMO Edited at 07:58 PM. |

We did a 2 night Carribean cruise from Miami a couple of years ago - one stop off was in Nassau and it was really intimidating at the Nassau port. We were hassled from the port all around the local streets. We had a coffee in Starbucks, took a few photos and hopped back on the ship! Probably if we had took the day trip to Atlantis is would have been nice but at $249 each for the day, not worth it as we only paid $199 late deal for the cruise each!

We walked to Janku beach about 20 mins away, we walked with the children.
Yes we were approached but a firm no was all it took and the walk felt very safe. We have just been in New York and was hassled much more and more aggressively. Shame to come so far and not see anything. We had about a Half day off the ship. Edited at 06:48 PM. |

A cab to Atlantis is only $4 each... although u can't use the private beach, there is a public beach and u can have a look around the hotel and have a flutter in their casino. It's a shame not to visit when u consider the likes of Micheal Jackson, Whitney Houston and mega stars all holiday there (or have done) A taste of how the other half live.

We are booked on a RCL cruise stopping at Nassau next May, BUT we got married on a beach in Nassuau the same day we dock there (It will be our 5th anniversary) so for us we really want to go back and see the island. We really enjoyed our week on Nassau and plan to revisit the hotel and also have a meal at Graycliffs like we did the day before our wedding...to us the island is quite special

If you have never visited before, go look but I guarantee you'll be back on board within an hour. Nassau is no great shakes. We saw it once and have never bothered since. Had much more fun staying on board.
