Rubbish internet connection every Sunday afternoon.

Nothing different happens to the internet in our house on a Sunday afternoon (same number of users etc) but I can almost guarantee that if, for instance, I want to watch something on Amazon Prime or Netflix etc, the buffering starts. Also, last Sunday our DGS wanted to play on his Xbox which is nothing different to usual. However, he had to switch it off in the end through frustration. I just cannot figure out why it is only a Sunday afternoon. Any suggestions would be welcome?

Remember that although you maybe sold a line speed, for example of 50Mbps, and may get that speed most of the time, the line is also shared at the exchange.
This use to be called the contention ratio and use to be 50:1. This means that up to 50 households could be sharing the same 50Mbps speed (or whatever you get). If everyone was online and downloading, you would see a massive decrease in speed.

Even though ISPs say they dont fully operate like this now, they still do to an extent. This means peak periods will see a dramatic drop in speed rates, depending on where you live and what everyone else is doing.

Speed test sites wont pick this up, due to the small time test they do.

I have to admit I havent seen Netflix buffer in a very long time as the screen resolution usually reduces first. What line speed do you usually get?

Thank you, that is a very helpful reply. I knew nothing about “sharing”. I believe the maximum speed for our area is 17. Not marvellous. 😟

You're not with BT are you? We used to be with BT and internet was painful every Sunday, constant buffering and unable to open pages. We moved to SKY and have been fine since.

ok, some basic fault finding needed...

have you got any devices plugged directly into the router rather than using wifi? if not, can you test using a wired connection on sunday to see if it has the same issues?

it could be that a microwave or some other RF emitting device is throwing the wifi out of whack and this will determine whether its your home wifi or the actual internet connection.

run a few speed tests from different devices. first off when it is all working ok during the week/whenever, then again when you start having issues on sunday. this will help with your case to your ISP when you call them.

finally, try disconnecting/switching off ALL devices that use the network/wifi apart from one while you are having the issues, just to see if it could be one of the devices that is causing the issues, rather than your connection. repeat the test, but with a different device to make sure the problem isnt with the device youre testing with to begin with

finally, after those checks, reboot your router while the issue is occurring, does it resolve the buffering problem? could potentially be an issue with your router, and if this is the case, get onto your ISP to replace the router with a newer model

after all this, call your ISP, tell them everything youve done, and ask them to run network diagnostics at their end, it could be contention on your street cabinet... if it is overloaded at this time, they probably need to look at upgrading the available bandwidth.

hope this helps...

I have the same issue between 5-6pm each evening. We live in an area with poor broadband speeds, average 11mbps and we are with BT.

I presume it’s a time that many in the area come home from work etc and log in. Our phone line is at the end of the exchange so I feel we lose speed more than others along the line. It’s frustrating but I don’t really think there’s a lot that can be done about it. BT just shrugged it off as one of those things when we mentioned it to an engineer once
