The Delta Orlando Resort--closed
The Delta Orlando Resort, a sprawling, 800-room hotel that seemed ideally located within walking distance of Universal Orlando, has abruptly closed its doors.
Owned by a Canadian investment group known as Universal Partners LLC, the 20-year-old Delta had ironically been troubled by, among other things, a shortage of the Canadian tourists who were long its bread and butter. Canadian travel to Orlando has swooned since last year's terrorist attacks, and a weak currency-exchange rate is discouraging a rebound. The Delta was also hurt by the opening of three luxurious hotels on Universal Orlando property, including the Royal Pacific Resort that opened this past spring. The Delta is a "victim of several factors that aren't its fault," said Walter Check, a marketing official at CVC & Associates, an Orlando hotel-renovation company that had recently signed a $450,000 contract to freshen the now-defunct resort's exterior. full story here orlandosentinel/busin...ss%2Dheadlines jj... |

This was the hotel that we were originally booked to stay with last year, but after researching it on the Dis, decided to rebook and stay at the Hi Universal.
All the reports were that it was badly maintained, smelly rooms, poor service etc so not surprised now that it has closed. |

interesting update
When the Delta Orlando Resort abruptly closed earlier this month, one seemingly unlikely party was out of the loop and hadn't heard about it: Delta Hotels, a hotel-management chain with 39 properties, mostly in Canada.
Toronto-based Delta said that, while Delta Orlando used to be part of its chain, the hotel hasn't been an officially flagged Delta lodging place since November 1991. Susana Petti, a spokeswoman for Delta Hotels, said executives there were surprised to learn that the hotel is still listed as the "Delta Orlando Resort" in the phone book and on Orange County tax rolls. The current owner of the failed property is listed as Universal Partners LLC, which lists its address in county records as a post office box in Winter Park. The company couldn't be reached for comment, and at least one potential buyer of the hotel has been trying to find a way to contact the owner. The 25-acre hotel, located at 5715 W. Major Blvd., is valued on the tax rolls at $16.3 million. jj... |
