Update on The Delta Orlando Resort

A recently shuttered hotel in a prime spot between Universal Orlando and the Mall at Millenia could be transformed into luxury lodging with pricey shopping and eating.

Potential buyers are kicking the tires, or at least the tennis courts, pools and 11 buildings at the rundown 800-room Delta Orlando Resort, which abruptly closed its doors in December following a long decline in occupancy rates.

People close to the situation said several contracts or agreements with refurbishers had been made, but the 3-decade-old Delta's business decline meant there wasn't enough capital to go through with such plans.

One commercial broker said his clients are considering one scenario in which about half of the Delta's 11 buildings would make way for a new resort with rooms starting at more than twice the roughly $100 per night that the old property offered.

The other half of the property would be reserved for shops and restaurants. The quest for a growing luxury market in Orlando has shifted into high gear lately, the broker said, citing the newly opened Mall at Millenia and several new high-end hotels debuting soon.
