Sights, Bites and Maltese Delights. Malta Oct 21. Day 6 part 3. Well that was a misteak.

I really am getting maximum value out of posting this birthday day

And it’s not a misspelling, just a dreadful pun on dreadful dinner.

So far, We’d had a lovely time and rather than overdoing it, decided to head back. We agreed we would come back for an other trip here wand we both had some reservations about visiting the gardens and getting even more mosquito bites

We decided to get the ferry back to Sliema . Fortunately a downhill route !

More lovely streets and buildings

This made me laugh. It wins the prize for least effective sign ever

The letter boxes were so tiny. How does Amazon function over here ?

Heading towards more steps

These hidden streets - loved them.

We could see the ferry terminal below and it looked like a boat coming in out in the distance so a bit of a dash to get down

I thought Andy was going to get stuck in this narrow alley

I’m sure this wasn’t the official route to the terminal

But we made it .. just getting on about 5 minutes before departure. It’s only a couple of Euros and a really quick trip

We decided to walk further into Sliema before calling a taxi and we stopped at the Chalet Terrace where it was happy hour and two very refreshing Cuba Libres were consumed ..

These cocktails are so cheap

The hotel car picked us up and brought us back through St Julians

Tonight’s dinner venue ...

and we had a bit of time in the room chilling out before dinner. I’d booked a steakhouse and was looking forward to it .

Unfortunately, this was probably the best thing about the evening - the funky stairs

It looked nice enough - it was so hot though - no air con on

We were initially quite glad not to be outside overlooking the water given the mossie bites - nice view tho ..

A couple came in after us and sat at that table - and they were served and finished and back at our hotel before us !

You could see the kitchen which was neat

We had a nice bottle of red - in fairness this was probably the best wine of the trip. But it took an age to order the drinks. They had a Birthday party in (another Amanda , it’s a small world ... ) and clearly it affected their ability to keep up with other tables

We both went for steaks

The bread service was very dry

We had some balsamic vinegar dipping sauce with it - we kept some back to have with the salad but unfortunately the server tipped it all over Andy’s place setting when clearing the side plates

We shared the tempura prawns and they were very nice

And then we waited

And waited

And waited

And an hour passed

And my “where’s my food” face came out

and we waited some more and I was getting really fed up

And then the steaks came out.

Andy was underwhelmed with his - very thin and just average

Mine was very nicely cooked

But salty. Too salty Like I might as well stick a straw in the salt cellar.

So disappointing - and - as it must have been a salt rub on both sides , I could only eat the middle.

We both tried to say it was ok but we both knew it was a very disappointing meal. It had taken over an hour for these wretched steaks to arrive and neither of them were very nice.

We left most of it and I was half tempted to see if the meal could be redeemed by dessert but the server knocked my wine glass when clearing and only my cat like reflexes avoided a dry cleaning disaster but it sealed it for me.

I couldn’t wait to leave. Dinner had been three times the price of other places and the service had been very poor. The floor manager could see we weren’t happy .. and we watched the server telling her that was the case .. but she wasn’t bothered in the least.

We paid the bill and left feeling that the meal was in no way deserving of that price. The reviews on tripadvisor had been mixed on the service but had praised the food. Well, they sure need to up their game on the service front.

At the hotel, I had a pannacotta and we sat in the bar for a bit

This was very nice and improved the mood a bit !
The quest for a nice birthday meal will continue ...

A dissapointing end to your birthday, also a shame they didn't seem at all bothered in the restaurant.

It was really disappointing. Fortunately the only blip in terms of service . I guess there’s always one on a trip !

So sorry you had a disappointing meal for your birthday. Poor service is enough to make me so cross nowadays, but when the food isn’t great either, how can they justify the higher price point?
