We've done incidrect via ATL and it was fine. We had a 3 hr layover and enjoyed pottering about the airport, having something to eat and stretching our legs.

Unfortunately, we had the opposite experience to most of the replies on our MAN-ATL-JAX flight last August, with immigration taking almost 2 hours.

The problem was caused by DW having a new passport and ESTA, so we were unable to use the facility whereby previous ESTA travellers could use the US scanners. The issue was compounded as there seemed to be several international flights having arrived at the same time, and good old US Borders Agency seeing fit to only open around 1/3 of the available desks.

We were fortunate in having a 3 hour connection, but the delay at immigration, then queuing for security again to catch our JAX flight did make things quite tights.

The return journey via the same route was a completely different story. On arrival at Atlanta, we just caught the Air Train between the two terminals, and we had a 2-1/2 hour connection but we're enjoying the facilities of the Delta lounge in little over 30 minutes.

We have returned back through Atlanta a number of times with under an hour. Do yourself a favour and have a look at the airport map so that you know where the gates are before you arrive.
