paulrae, I've commented before about Virgin Atlantic's special assistance scheme and my experience of it, although I travelled through Manchester and Orlando International, not Gatwick. I had wonderful service going out at both M'cr and Orlando but my return journey was lacking somewhat in 'assistance - there wasn't any!

On returning, I checked in at Orlando and asked if the queue for security was long and I got a shrug of the shoulders. At that point, I should have demanded assistance as I knew I was on the system but as I can walk a little, I decided to give it a go, rather than cause a scene. What a mistake! The queue for security took over an hour and by then, I was nearly falling over but I just made it. At the departure gate, I mentioned the problem to Virgin staff and didn't get an apology.

On arrival at Manchester, there were no wheelchairs to be seen and no staff to ask. I just made it to passport control and a kindly 'queue marshal' saw my predicament and ushered me to the disabled queue which was a good deal shorter.

In summary therefore, I'd recommend that you speak up for the special assistance that you request. Don't be shy like I was as the discomfort and pain that I went through at the end of a good holiday overshadowed it somewhat.

Gatwick are superb with special assistance. Both kids absolutely loved going through the family security point and the staff were friendly, helpful and funny made the start to the holiday brilliant.
