Children dealing with hospitals -ideas please?
DD was meant to have her MRI on thursday, but the list over-ran and we were cancelled (at 5pm), this was made worse when i phoned the next day she had been put down as a DNA (did not attend), which made me cross, as there are consequences if you fail to take your child to an appointment, they said she would go back on the list with this corrected, but no appointment until december, we went to PALS but in the meantime luckily the anaesthetist stepped in and said we needed sooner, so got 17th november, so now got to pray DD stays cold/sickness free for two more weeks, not an easy task with a 7 year old at school in autumn term! Trouble is DD is now very anxious about having the GA/scan, she has had them since aged about 1, and has 2 a year, we going to put pictures on her ipad to talk her thru it, as she wil need these all her life so it makes it easier if she isnt scared. She gets a 'surprise' afterwards in her 'magical unicorn backpack' after anything medical, any other ideas of helping her through?

How about if Mickey sent her a postcard wishing her well? I'm sure someone going over shortly would send if you asked. If she has had lots already is there something specific she is worried about?

Most hospitals have a play therapy nurse, they are great at the issues you have. Contact them.
Although its a regular thing for you both, as children get older they become self aware and worry more so use the available resources. Some children have pre anaesthetic sedation to take at home. A treat as you do when the scan/treatment is done is a positive thing. Take Care |

No advice really just wanted to sympathise as a similar thing happened to us last month my DS operation was cancelled at 3 pm. He was understandably upset and is now more nervous than ever. I keep taking about the positives eg visits from Grandma while recovering presents ext. It's hard at that age ( D's is 8) it's the first time he's been really worried about an operation.

We havent mentioned new scan date for her yet, we will tell her the evening before, so she wont have longer to worry about it. Might have to take her to see consultant anyway before then, she has been having alot of stomach aches, dont know if its anxiety, acid reflux, or something connected with her NF1, which is her main condition and can cause stomach upset. So many things going on!

Evidently age about 4-8 kids do get very stressed, as they are too young to understand wholly about whats going on and so have alot of fear of the unknown. Being psyched up for it and it doesnt happen is so stressful for them android they know they got to go thru all that again. Hope your DS gets his op soon. X
