Car hire
Hi,
we have not been to Disney for 10 years so I imagine a lot has changed but it is definitely more expensive! We are looking to go January 2023 and have got a package price with Virgin we are happy with but the car hire seems really expensive, can anyone suggest somewhere to get more reasonably priced car hire? Thanks Sue x |

Car hire prices these last 12 months or so have been the worse I've experienced in years.
We've used Andy at DFCH about 6 or 7 times in the last few years although sadly we've had to cancel the last three. It may still be a bit early to get good prices (we never book more that 12 months out) but he's been providing excellent off-line quotes to other Dibbers recently if you email him direct. discountfloridacarhire/ His customer service is great as well - currently helping Dibbers to get their money back for cancellations with companies not even booked with him. Your post may be moved by the Mods to the car sub-forum where you'll get more replies. Edit - now moved Mick PS If you stick with Virgin make sure you top up the basic insurance to include CDW (with no excess) and $1m SLI

Hopefully prices will start dropping again next year once the rental companies have restocked their fleets. If/when that happens, we can amend the booking to the cheaper price.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. We have now booked our holiday for January 2023 but not any car hire as we will follow your advice and book closer to the time. Andy we will definitely be in touch with you, when do you think would be the best time to start looking? Thanks Sue |

Hi Sue, I too recommend Andy especially as he oft has access to better offline rates .
I'd wait until circa mid 2022 due to shortages hire car suppliers are dealing with after selling a large chunk of their inventories due to Covid, which they're currently unable to replenish due to a significant lack of micro chips required in new vehicles. Andy will always keep you right

Just to expand on the reasons:
1. All the companies sold their fleet off during lockdowns, as they were all just basically parked up 2. Because of the worldwide semi conductor shortage, there is then a shortage of chips, meaning a shortage of cars to refill that fleet 3. Because of that shortage, the ones they have are like "gold dust" SD

Hiya SD, meant to post last year, but with one thing 'n another I forgot. 3rd Apr 2020, a 15 acre fire destroyed 3,991 [$100m in damage] motors at a grass overflow rental car parking lot near Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW). Certainly won't help current inventory woes. Investigators ruled the fire accidental, citing potential hot exhaust over dry grass.
Video/article HERE (need to pass 'human' check first).

Chris I'm sure someone also told me that there had been a major fire at an essential component factory as well so almost a perfect storm of accidents etc!
& For anyone that's currently looking for a second hand car, also the reason that forecourt prices are up by about £2k! SD

Remember seeing the 6th April, 15 acre, fire on Wink news, whilst preparing to get the heck out of dodge! Luckily we own an old banger in Fl so hire/2nd hand prices aren't an issue.
A 1st June 2021 article from Forbes (see HERE) shows some car manufacturers production reduction, plus 'no light at the end of the tunnel' and speculation it may take 2 years to resolve: An ongoing shortage of microchips has resulted in hundreds of thousands of automobiles being taken out of production across North America. Vital for onboard computer and infotainment systems as well as important safety features such as anti-lock brakes and stability control, the chips have been in short supply across the globe for much of this year. There have been several contributing factors that have combined to create the perfect storm for automakers including a fire at an automotive chip plant in Japan and the infamous grounding of the Ever Given container ship in the Suez Canal that stretched supply chains. Oil is used to make the plastic in microchips and shortages caused by the big freeze in Texas earlier this year exacerbated the problem. Lower demand for cars during earlier stages of the pandemic also led many automakers to cancel orders for microchips, a decision they are now regretting. A report by AutoForecast Solutions covered by Car and Driver has shed light on just how badly North American automakers have been impacted by the microchip shortage. It has caused Ford to take 346,616 vehicles out of production while General Motors GM -0.4% has reduced its production total by 277,966. When it comes to the models most impacted by the shortage, the Ford F-Series pickup comes first on the list with 109,710 units fewer planned for production. 98,584 fewer Jeep Cherokees are planned while 81,833 fewer Chevrolet Equinoxes are in the pipeline. Unfortunately, there is no light at the end of the tunnel for hard-pressed carmakers with Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger remarking earlier this week that the problem could take a couple of years to resolve.
