We have stayed at FMB a few time usually 3/4 nights and planning on it again next year. We stay at the Outrigger Beach resort which is at the bottom of the Estero Island section where the beach widens out - they used to do a free tram (currently suspended until Jan 2022) but last time we just paid $4 for a 3 day trolley pass which can take you all the way from the top of the Estero right down to Lovers Key state park.
We really enjoyed it and love the outrigger and we pay a bit extra to stay in the beach front efficiency and opt for ground floor so the doors open right out on to the beach - it's plenty big enough for the 4 of us - we always select the one with 2 double beds and 1 sofa bed so my 14 yo DS can have the sofa then usually 10yo DD sleeps with me or on her own, which means I am in with her or DH depending what mood she is in Think we paid $270 per night or something last time. Food is nice at the pool bar, the drinks are very nice haha and they had happy hour and cocktails of the day for like $3 or something - lots of chairs on the beach to watch the sunset and a fella kept playing a massive conch shell at sunset Plenty of bars and restaurants at the top end to explore and a good base to visit other beaches for a day / 1/2 day or whatever. outriggerfmb/ If you are flying in to Tampa do check out AMI, that is our "home" and we always do a week there but it can be pricier! We have stayed at the Edison beach house a number of times can't rate it high enough. Great location 2 mins from the pier, the place has always been spotless, the staff are really friendly. Beautiful beach. It's my special place!

Oh that's a shame, but probably saved you 30-50% of the cost so look at it as a positive! It will still be lovely, the main rooms are in the same building as the as the beach front rooms of them iirc. You are still right on the sand and we really liked the tiki bar to watch the sunset. It's really lovely
