When my late MIL's house was sold her solicitor held onto some of the money for awhile before finalising her estate. The purchaser's solicitor certainly didn't. I can't see what business of their's it would be if any debts did turn up. As already mentioned, anything secured on the house will have shown on the title search and would probably be for more than £750 anyway.

Definitely should not be a just in case of debts. The only time this should happen is if there is a crystallised payment which relates to the period before completion but the sum cannot be fully quantified at the time of sale. The obvious example is service charge on a leasehold property.

I'd tell the purchasers to go whistle.

They aren't going to pull out over 750, they'd lose far more than that in reinstated stamp duty and house price inflation.

Stand strong and tell them to do one...
