Amex Shop small - be careful when ordering online

Just a word about the Amex Shop small promotion which is running at the moment. I used my BA Amex online to order a takeaway from a local restaurant because it is still closed due to Covid. They have a system of order online and they bring it to your car when collecting.

I didn't realise that the terms of the Shop Small offer is purely for "instore" use and I don't qualify for the £5 cashback. So if you are doing something similar just bear in mind you might not qualify. It's only a small thing but its just annoying especially when you can't actually go into this particular venue anyway as they haven't reopened yet.

I used my card in my local bakers today and got an email saying "Thanks etc" thats what prompted me to check. I think the general rule is use the offer in a store/bar/cafe/restaurant rather than an online order.

I'm hoping to use it in a local coffee shop who is offering the 'eat out scheme' and spend £20 between two of us and get it for half price taking it to a tenner and then get a fiver back

You can contact Amex and ask them if they would look at your account and they may give you 2 x £5 back. It helps if you have a screen shot of the map/list to show the reailers are on there. Hope that helps.

I have had the opposite - a restaurant (which was on the Shop Small list in the past and did not appear this year) that I went to on Tuesday seems to have triggered an email saying thank you for shopping small! If it does work it will be like rebelrebel's comment re Eat Out + £5 back.

Amex shop small does seem to have its quirks every year.

Sounds like they are getting strict but it would help if their systems were correct. I had one denied because the restaurant was closed due to CV and won't be reopening soon but Amex just said you have until the end of the promotion to use it again.

Really? That is so unfair, they are advertising it as on their map and will have proof of your transaction . I've always found them to be really helpful when I've had to call them on other things, hope they're not going downhill.
