Word of warning for Daytona, it's seen as a petrolhead's paradise and cars are allowed to race up and down the beach BETWEEN where kids are with their parents and the sea.

Hell hole of a beach that I would never venture near again.

daytonabeach/things-...-on-the-beach/

10MPH yeah right!

we didn't see one car at that speed

The beaches have more patrols than you can imagine and in over 30 years I have never seen a car speeding.

Also the beach is over 20 miles long and 50% of it has no cars at all.

Never listen to day trippers when you want advice about a destination.

Lots already covered here, but with kids I would recommend the gulf coast over the eastern side as the gulf is so warm and calm. We stayed at Disney’s Vero Beach on the Atlantic side and the water was too rough for both me and ds and he is a really good swimmer. We love St Pete beach and it’s always been very quiet at the end of august. The hotel we love there has doubled in price so we are venturing to Clearwater, staying on the Sandkey, I’m hoping it’s the best of both worlds, quieter beach with plenty of restaurants in Clearwater itself.
