I'd also go with muzzled. Not only to reduce the risk to other children, but also other dogs.
As a dog owner, I've had several 'larger dogs' go for ours, which I feel should have been on a leash or at least muzzled. We have a family friend who's dog was attacked and killed by a German shepherd last year, whilst out walking. Her dog was still on its lead. The Alsatian wasn't and it's owner walked away without a care in the world. Police got involved and that dog is now required to wear a muzzle. |

Just realised it was 3 years ago. How time flies.
barnsleychronicle/art...r-pet-attacked The family friend found out who the owner was and went and confronted them on their doorstep. Only to receive a police caution for threatening behaviour towards the Alsatian owners wife. The man wouldn't come to the door. She let off steam, nothing physical. Just emotionally charged. The final outcome was that dog has now to be muzzled. |

Just read the article. They must have been heartbroken. Why was the dog owner never prosecuted. Had that been my Alsatian I would have been devastated to think my dog had killed someone's family pet. At least a muzzle order and leash surely, and a most sincere apology to your friend. I too would have been emotionally charged.

Muzzle definitely. I don't think the dog should be put down (if that's a possibility here), but people should be able to walk along pavements and through parks without being bitten (or even bothered) by domestic animals. Of course, if there's more of a history here, then the owner carries even more responsibility. Purplelady, how's your daughter doing?

My DS was bitten by a family dog a couple of years ago. It was unprovoked and very traumatic for all of us. We reported it to the police and the dog was destroyed.
The family members in question no longer speak to us and it has sent a few ripples through the family. I felt pretty awful when the police informed me that the dog was no more but I would have felt much worse if the dog had hurt someone else. Also my DS was only 2 at the time and the experience was pretty horrendous. Ultimately though I'm pleased I called the police. In our case the dog owners weren't prosecuted (at my request) but if they hadn't of agreed to hand the dog over it would have been a different story. If the owner is willing to hand the dog over, prosecution can possibly be avoided if you don't feel that is necessary. You have my sympathy, it's an awful situation to be in. |

Hello all and thank you for your replies.
We are still waiting for a police officer to get in touch with us, the 101 operator said someone would ring us within a.week. DD did not pet or approach the dog as she passed as she is not really a dog lover and doesn't pet my SIL's dog or my best friends dog. She just passed by and the next thing it had hold of her arm. We have not made any decisions yet. However... we went to the hairdresser today and she was asking DD what happened to her arm, told her the story and to cut a long story short the hairdressers friend used to live near this guy and the friend had an Alsatian . The Akita used to get out of its garden and go into the Alsatians garden and attack it so I need to find out more information to make sure it is the same guy or if its someone completely different. |

I would not prosecute, given that the police have no history of the dog biting anyone.
I was bitten by my own dog on Friday night, and have exactly the same mark as you describe your DD as having (puncture mark, bruise and was swollen for a day or so). She was getting a bit rough during play with the puppy, and when I tried to separate them she grabbed my arm. It was a complete accident and she was sucking up to me all night. If I were in the position of the dog owner and it ended up going to prosecution I would be completely devastated.
