Are There Any Workmen Who Want Work Out There?

😡 Bit of a rant I’m afraid. We were supposed to have a fencer come and start work today, yep you guessed it hasn’t turned up!
We have had 11 fencing firms not turn up to do quotes or give quotes and not turn up to do the work! We have been trying since January to get our fence done 😡
The fencing bloke asked me to have half the money ready for last week for materials and work would start today. So he never turned up last week and no show today!
So if anyone knows of a reliable fencer in or around Rotherham, who wants work and will turn up to do the job let me know!

Rant over!

Jane 🙄

I have been looking for a carpenter for months, and having the same problems. They are all working too hard at the moment are booked up for months - very frustrating. My last one offered me Feb, said yes (I'm desperate), said he would send a quote, and never did. Back to the drawing board for me.

I hope you manage to find someone suitable soon.

Perfect storm sadly

Shortage of materials.
People spending 'unspent' holiday money on jobs.
Shortage of Tradesmen due to lots of Eastern Europeans leaving. Some of them were excellent at their Trade as well.

Some of my Mates are long retired and used to work 1 or 2 days a week for a bit of cash in hand. They are now working full time and raking it in.

To highlight the materials issue I have got roof tiles on order. Nothing unusual in the design - 10+ weeks for delivery and that's not guaranteed. Used to be 1 day from stock.

DH is a carpenter and has been flat out. Echoing what Mr T said, the issue is with materials. We ordered some cladding back in April - still waiting and no sign of when it’ll come. Also, costs of materials have rocketed.

We had a quote for a new patio back in April - 1st person wouldn’t come out and said September at earliest. The guy we used was here mid July - but is now booked up to December.

Sand is a major issue as well. The Environmentalists are clamping down on quarries. Sea sand is no good so that can't be used as an alternative sadly.

Youngsters nowadays need to forget University. Get on the Tools!

Past 2 months I have had a plumber, decorator, plasterer all turn up when expected. They have all said materials have gone up ( quotes honoured). One said a job a mate had quoted has gone up £60,000 on wood costs alone due to supply/demand. Covid= no holidays= money for home improvements.
Plumber had retired but working due to demand.
I hate people not turning up a phone call/text costs pennies.

Took us 18 months to find someone to repoint the brickwork on our house - waited 12 months for one builder, who then eventually told us he was too busy to do the work! Scaffolding is turning up in sections - started a week late , and then only erected it on one side of the house. 3 weeks later, and the front of the house still doesn't have any scaffolding. It's driving me nuts.
