Remember if you are going to the Vatican, they are strict about dress code - shoulders and knees have to be covered, and they will turn you away if you’re in eg shorts.
Best thing about Rome is just wandering, and then stopping at a pavement cafe in any square that takes your fancy, e.g. Campo dei Fiori. You’ll have a wonderful time.! |

Love Rome, but with all the cobbles comfy shoes are a must !
Its easy to walk everywhere, but we also did a hop on hop off bus tour, as we found it great on our last day to quickly visit various places we wanted to go back to easily. For eating would definitely recommend these two restaurants: tripadvisor/Restau...ome_Lazio.html tripadvisor/Restau...ome_Lazio.html You'll have a great time. Rome is wonderful. |

We love Rome! For eating it is really inconsistent some really swanky looking restaurants in the posher parts of town are cheaper than some of the more moderate restaurants as they add loads on! Same with alcohol we find sometimes a quick drink somewhere can be lots cheaper in the nicer parts of town - around the colloseum and on the way to Vatican City you can be really ripped off!
You can book an underground tour of the colosseum quite cheaply ahead of going which is good, personally I like a stroll around the circus maximus as I enjoy its history. The capitoline hill and Roman forum are very interesting. We booked a tour around the Vatican museum as it is full of things we weren’t so sure of and that was definitely worth the money to skip the line and very informative, you have an earpiece so you can hear the guide as you move around. Another good piece of advice I was given was eat where the clergy eat as they know where to go! Getting food and drink near the Vatican is something we have yet to do without feeling completely ripped off. It’s an easy city to do on foot with a paper map - people are mostly helpful but the street hawkers selling jewellery and selfie sticks are annoying. |

Two places we like to eat, one is a place, Piaza Nirvona, it's a big square with artists and street performers. The restaurants are dotted around the perimeter of the square and it has a really nice atmosphere.
The other is near the Spanish Steps. Imagine you are stood at the bottom of the steps facing them. Turn to your right and walk for 100 metres or so and there is a square on your left. In the square are two restaurants, we have eat at the one on the right twice, both meals were delicious.

As all others have said, but we also did a Segway tour. This was a nightlight of our trip... We found most places we could walk to apart from Vatican City and Colosseum.
Best city break by far, not sure how we could top it... |

We're in Rome right now (in an AirBnB apartment from where we can hear the Trevi Fountain). We did over 25,000 steps yesterday, "only 17,000 today! Bring comfy footwear
Definitely prebook the Vatican and Colosseum. we went to the Vatican yesterday and the queue to get in if you hadn't prebooked looked to be several hours long, and that was at 3pm. We stayed until it closed (and went round twice to see the Sistine Chapel). By 5pm most of the tour groups had gone and the galleries were really quiet. Bear in mind the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel are closed on Sundays, and this week on Monday too, and doesn't open until late on Tuesday this week - check the official website for closures. We haven't bothered with a Romapass as we like to walk everywhere, but have used the Metro a couple of times. It's not like the London Underground or Paris Metro (although equally easy to use) - there aren't very many lines and most of the places of interest are a good 10-15 minutes walk from a station - not the Colosseum though, you come out of the station and there it is The Trevi Fountain itself is absolutely heaving with people all day and late into the evening, but if you can get there first thing in the morning you stand a better chance of getting close enough to throw in some coins. We went to St Peter's today and actually saw the Pope, we came out of the Basilica and walked back down the square, wondering what all the crowds were for - and there he was talking from a balcony. We're not Catholics and had no idea that this is quite a frequent thing - I've just found this on Tripadvisor "Almost every Sunday he's in Rome, the Pope recites the Angelus (or the Regina Coeli during Easter season) at noon from a balcony overlooking St. Peter's Square." So that's what we saw.
