Mask requirements on the plane for kids

I’ve been fortunate to travel to the US a few times since the ban and would say I’ve experienced a mix when it comes to enforcement.

Domestic internal flights do seem to enforce the rules more, so if travelling indirect please keep this in mind.

Jet blue was by far the strictest, I witnessed a family off loaded because a young child struggled to wear a mask. They even made you put your mask on between sips of a drink. Delta was the most relaxed. After take off, they gave you a bag with some water and snacks and that was it - you didn’t see them anymore (so most onboard had the mask under chin look going on).

Each time I’ve returned with Virgin and for children, it was more a polite reminder. However, for adults, they do tell you to wear it throughout flight and come back to check compliance.

As for Disney, it was a little more relaxed with each visit (more so for children than adults), but the last time they did make a point of reminding you throughout the day (at this time the mask rule was indoor only). I noticed a couple of CM’s say things like “face mask buddy” to the kids so not confrontational.

In terms of Airports, New York (JFK) was stricter than Orlando but I did get told off at MCO as for some reason I took my mask off and placed it in the tray for scanning. I did feel rather silly having to stand there and get an ear bashing in front of everyone.

As it’s been mentioned, I would plan for some level of enforcement, especially if you intend to use a domestic flight.

If the parent doesn’t give two hoots then fair enough, but most responsible parents will be polite and attempt to manage it themselves as they know the child better than anyone.

I said apply the law liberally. I.e not apply all the measures they can if the person is trying to comply but cannot.

But again, any implying professionally trained flight crews will not bother or that there are not potentially serious consequences is at best unhelpful and frankly, niave. As I say, I work with a major airport, flight crews take their responsibilities seriously.

If I was getting on a plane with a child, I’d have done my best to prepare for that child to wear a mask for the duration of the flight as my expectation would be that the law would be enforced. Anything less than that is just better than what I prepared for.

I’ve had a response from BA special assistance regarding my daughter who is autistic. She will not need to wear a mask on the flight.

I had a similar response from BA they said while a doctors note is not needed, it would be useful to have incase asked.

As for virgin they seem much stricter and said the following:
When it comes to flying, in order to be exempt from wearing a mask, we need proof in the following way
· A medical certificate or letter which has been signed* or stamped by a medical professional. *The signature can be an electronic one.
· The medical certificate/letter will need to have been written by a GP, Specialist Nurse or any other suitably qualified medical/health professional (such as a mental health professional).
· The letter must outline the customers medical condition and the fact that they are exempt from wearing a face mask.

Obviously the rules may change between now and when you fly (I’m looking at September next year).

Thanks - we are flying domestic with BA on Friday and long haul in December, so I will update.

I believe BA give you a mask, hand sanitiser and (one!) anti-bac wipe when you board. Certainly for the long haul, we won't be using theirs unless it's the kind with high filtration, and we'll be changing them often. Only giving one out for each journey seems a bit daft.

And plenty sanitiser wipes.

We flew BA to Barbados in August and home from LA last week. We were given one wipe in a resealable bag. That was it. We had a box of masks and our own wipes as we weren't expecting to be given any.
