For relief when it's itching like mad the back of a hot spoon works every time. It needs to be really hot and the first couple of seconds it really hurts but then you go "AHHHHHH" as the itching (and the swelling) subside

DH really suffers. Massive red lumps which used to require hospital visits. After being bit in the Mid West by mutant mossies at a nuclear missile site, despite precautionary spraying of deet over all clothes and bare skin, we were advised by a pharmacy doctor to do the following - antihistamine tablets, tea tree oil dabbed on at regular intervals and clear calamine smothering the area. This combined with full strength deet has reduced the problem considerably. Even helped with the ant bites in Mexico.

I swear by Boots Bite and Sting relief antihistamine cream.

Dh had some itchy whoppers he had to take anti histamine 3 times a day and antibiotics!
