What would you prefer as a gift...

The lady who I commissioned to do a portrait of our late Mr. Douglas has finished the portrait and am so looking forward to see my husbands face on Christmas Day, even though I know there will be many tears.

Well I have paid her, but as a thank you as the painting is so amazing I want to give her something for Christmas.

We both adore Lake Garda and our hotel and our fabulous hotelier, they have been there many many times as we have too.

The speciality wine out there is Lugana.

Now I was thinking of getting her a bottle of Champagne from Fortnum and Mason as its a little special, but a little while ago, just found a hamper of 6 bottles of Lugana for a couple of pound more.

What do think would be better ?. I am slightly leaning to the Hamper as it will remind her of Italy and our forthcoming holidays, god willing. x

Hamper of wine from the region that links you together, that’s a really thoughtful gift.

I would sway towards the hamper as well, the 6 bottles of wine that you know they enjoy linked to a place they like as well is really thoughtful.

I know I’m in the minority but I wouldn’t thank you for either. Neither of us like champagne or wine .

However, if you know that she likes both I’d go for the wine.

I’d be super thankful of any gift that anyone bought me. People buy me chocolate, or wine I wouldn’t choose and I thank them kindly, then give them to my husband or my best friend etc.
I’m happy because I got a gift, my husband is happy because he got chocolate or red wine. The gift giver is happy because I expressed how kind it was of them.
But OP I’d go with the wine x

Of course, I am also grateful for any gift I receive. I used a figure of speech without thinking. I have over the years received many bottles of champagne and wine as gifts which I have thanked the gifter for but have then had to give away or regift. I may be wrong but I think all of the gifters over the years would have preferred to give me something that I would use and enjoy myself .

Perhaps what I should have said is, are you sure she likes wine or champagne as it sounds like you want to give her something that she will enjoy rather than something she won’t drink.

I have no taste and am not classy

OH and I dined in a lovely, fairly upmarket steak restaurant last year and did feel slightly out of place ordering a coke and a Diet Coke to complement our meal
