Shelling on west coast?
We are looking for somewhere for an overnight trip along the west coast where the kids can look for shells and stand a decent chance of finding some.
I’ve heard Sanibel island is good - anyone had any experience of this? Or anywhere else? Thanks!

Bowmans Beach on Sanibel is good for shelling, it is quite a hike from the car park! Blind Pass where Sanibel joins Captiva is a better place but the car park is smaller so you need to get there early. There is quite a current here but if you go at low tide you don't need to go in the water. Stay on the Sanibel side for better shells. We have a hue goldfish type bowl full of shells.
The best tip is to check the tide table for low tide.

Sanibel shelling at dawn is a thing of joy. Go to the Lighthouse point of the island as it's got great shelling due to currents. The seabirds are feeding along the shoreline and just watch the sun rising and the colours. There will be many others doing the 'Sanibel Stoop'. Have picked up some wonderful shells there.

Fab, thanks both! Have booked a night in hotel by lighthouse at Sanibel. Now just got to make sure we get up early that morning!

I'm probably a bit late with this suggestion but Venice and its surrounding areas have a lot of fossilised Sharks teeth ,kids love looking for them

We found some beautiful shells at Bowmans Beach and personally didn't find the walk to the beach bad at all.
