I really miss having a dog.

We lost our dog in April just before his 15th birthday and I miss him terribly. We married 33 years ago, and have had a pet dog for all but 2 years of them.
In fact we have had a pet dog for the past 31 years apart from the time between losing our first boy, at aged 15 and getting our second boy.
It wouldn’t be fair to get another at the moment as our work pattern would mean it would be on its own a lot.
There’s no point to this post, I just wanted to get it out there.

Ah that is sad, and I can understand how you feel. I feel too sad to look at the photos of the lovely doggies we've lost over the years as they really were part of the family. We lost one of our dogs early last year, and now our girl cocker howls when she's left on her own for 5 minutes. She is 12 and a half and we are thinking of getting a puppy, but we have a slight concern that she will teach it to howl with her?

My cocker has cost me a lot of money because I won't leave her for more than a couple of hours at a time, and I subsequently turn lots of work down. Admittedly I am semi retired (and quite lazy) so it's not such a big deal.

I appreciate you putting the dog's welfare first, because I get really annoyed with people who get a dog and then leave it on its own all day while they work.

I could have written your post myself so understand how you feel. We lost our 14 year old cocker in February and miss him dreadfully. With two out of the three boys leaving home in the last 12 months the house is very empty but like you with our work patterns it wouldn't be fair to have another one at the moment. I may look into the ideas from previous posters so thank you for posting.

I emphasise completely.
I don’t want to think about the time we won’t have our boy around us ... it will be devastating.

I didn’t last long after we lost my beloved Comet...picture below. 💔..we went on to get my springers as I couldn’t have the house empty.

I can sympathise totally, its 4 years since we lost our girl she was 14 and a half The house has never felt the same without her.

We are looking to get another dog after Christmas as I am dropping some hours at work so will be able to look after a pup then.

DH is the one dragging his feet as he was the one who was with her when she went to sleep, he said the light going out of her eyes was the worst thing he ever had to see. It gave him so many sleepless nights for months after. He said that if we do get another dog he will never go to the vets with him/her as it is just too painful I have to respect his feelings with this, but would love another one or two dogs in our life.

Watch this space!

Jane

I worked with someone who had a dog from the guide's dog in training but only at weekend's as she works all week. There are some charities which ask for volunteers to walk dogs could be worth looking into.
