I would say that 13 is too young to look after kids (that aren't your siblings) unless you (her parent) are going to be around that night and can get there to sort any issues in a couple of minutes.

Basically are you prepared to be the co-babysitter, waiting in your own house ready to leap into action if required? If not I'd say wait a couple of years.

But then again all 13 year olds are different and all you get kids are different too, so it may be just fine.

I babysat for people on our estate when I was 12, BUT, my friend also 12 was with me and it was a small estate! We all knew each other and I could have knocked on any door for help if I’d needed it.

My daughters are both 14 and are very sensible, good kids but I only leave them alone for a couple of hours max through the day and I wouldn’t leave them in charge of other children even though there’s two of them.

When I was eleven I babysat my then seven-month-old brother and two other siblings for my Mother and Father to go out for a couple of hours on a Boxing Night.

This was 1964/5 and kids were a lot more responsible. Was it right? Who's to say, that's how it was then.

By the time I was twelve I was babysitting for three other families plus my own sibs.

I'd been mixing feeds and changing nappies for my brother from the day he was born, I wanted to. My mother couldn't get a look in, I got up with him in the night, too.

No mobile phones, not even house phones.
