Harrogate is another good shout and (in my opinion) used to be a 'posh' place but I think it has gone a bit down hill, but still a nice place to visit, but only for a day - but that's just my view.

Rather than the cost of York hotels etc. look in such as Otley which is a small market town, probably cheaper but you can still get to Harrogate, Ilkley, York etc. dead easy by car and saves forking out for top dollar accommodation just because you're in York (tourist trap!)

Again I havent been for many years but Ripon ? Very historic town (technically I think it's a city - it has an amazing cathedral)

I have stayed in a few places in the lakes but if you want something special google "armathwaite hall"

It's not cheap but full of character.

Lake district gets my vote stay in kendal and you've got it all nearby. Liverpool is great city break with so much going in every week. Leeds is lovely too as is York x

My first instinct was York! but you've been recently.
We spent a few days mid week in Whitby two weeks ago, and it's now probably my second favourite place after York for a short break.
I know goth weekend is coming up soon, so something to be mindful of as it'll be packed.
