If Covid is your concern I would provide gloves/gel and a mask. I too would wear the same and after they have gone it’s obviously a good clean down. You could obviously say to them on the phone other wise that you are not allowing test drives but is that any different (re. Covid) than them coming to see the car and sitting in it?

I wouldn’t buy a car without test driving .. and I wouldn’t expect someone to buy from us and not want to test drive it first ..

Driving a car is very different to just sitting inside it , we test drove a Discovery a few weeks ago and it had a fault with revving too high which we wouldn’t have found just sitting in it .

You can get day policies for £30 ish , or they may well be covered on their own policy

We recently drove to Harrogate to test drive DS saw a car online which, if was as good as he thought it would be would buy the same day. It was a private sale. DH and DS went for test drive with the buyer. Guy selling the car offered to put a mask on, to which DH and DS said, no your fine! Anyway, he bought the car. Had it not been in the middle of a pandemic we’d have stayed for the weekend. 5 and a half hour drive one way!

DS had insurance in place so he could test drive.

I have only sold a car privately once and they did not ask for a test drive and nor would I have allowed it if they had asked. I would not allow it because they could have driven off with car and I would not have accompanied them as I am female and this is dangerous.

I bought my current car without even seeing it in person never mind test driving it (although that was from a registered dealer).

I’ve just sold a car, and as I was wanting approx £11500 was worried about a private sale. I contacted all the usual online companies, but was very taken with Arnold Clark’s price. They offered the price I’d been looking for, and surprisingly paid that full amount when I took the car in. I’d highly recommend them for a stress free sale if you have one local.

This is what I was going to suggest. I know they offer a fair price.

Thankyou 😀 I’m not a particularly Covid stressed person, and I looked it up and test drives are allowed with a person, so that’s fine.

It was really the insurance element. Previously I would have been fine with them having a quick drive third party, but they have always been much cheaper cars and I’ve just got worried in case anything happens.
This car is still the most expensive car I’ve ever owned despite owning it for 3 years and it obviously dropping value. Circa £6k is just a lot to lose, so I just had a minor panic yesterday when the first person rang.
If they have insurance then great, but I can just see them not having...

Ive sold lots of cars, I always offer the option of give me the cash for the full asking price then take the car for as long as you like, return it in the same condition I give you the cash back, don’t and I won’t.

No deposits etc because where so you draw the line, full amount left with me only.

Or I would accompany etc.

If they don’t - they take 5/10 minutes tops to set up and they can start immediately
