I was always told not to drink from the hot water tap upstairs or down, but I wasn’t told not to drink from the cold tap upstairs.

I was brought up on a small holding we had one tap that drinking / cooking water came from it was an underground spring the water man came every other week to check the water
The other water came through a huge holding tank heated god knows how because the huge aga in the kitchen was used for cooking central heating etc we also, had an old fashioned range that mum used a lot I remember the kettle always being on the range
Even in summer if the aga was off if it was off bath water was heated in the wash hoose copper,
We always had hot water

The only time I’ve looked into a cold water tank there were dead mice in it. So drink from the mains tap!

Omg... Im so glad I didnt drink from the bathroom tap when I was a kid, as Im pretty sure we had a water tank in the attic. It never occurred to me that rodents could make their way into it!

Our current house was built in 2000, and Im sure there is no holding tank in the attic, just a hot water tank in the airing cupboard on the first floor.

Thank you for all your input... its been enlightening

This is the wrong way round. Turn your stop cock off, if you cold water carryings on flowing its from a tank. Your stop cock is stopping mains fed water coming into your house.
Updated my post. I wasn't concentrating

If you have a hot tank in airing cupboard you'll likely have a tank in the loft to fill it. It's how that hot water system works. That's why you don't drink from the hot tap.

Houses don't have storage for the cold water taps.
