Back yesterday

Hi we returned yesterday from our 6th Vegas trip and I thought I would give some of my thoughts on the past two weeks.

We flew from Manchester with Thomas Cook. We live in Glasgow and use Manchester quite a lot but I had decided to try and make this the last time as the drive home was getting quite tiring as we get a bit older.
The flight out was great! There was no turbulence, the flight path seemed to be slightly different to what I remember in the past, but I might just be imagining that. On the way back, another story. Quite a bit of it (I don’t like taking off and turbulence). Also I have never been on a flight before with so many passengers ignoring the fasten seatbelt sign to either go to the loo or just stand up.

Arrived in Vegas about 45 mins early and got through customs and out the airport really quickly. We had our car hire from Avis which we are preffered members and the service was second to none. When we seen the car we were getting we asked about the swap lane as we couldn’t see it. They said they don’t have it anymore we just need to ask. So they offered us 2 vehicles, one of them being a Jeep Grand Cherokee. We chose this and what a great car.
We had our friend with us who was visiting Vegas for the first time. The car fitted in 3 huge cases and 2 sets of golf clubs and the three of us.

This was the first time we haven’t stayed on the strip. I decided last year that I was actually going to grudge the resort fee and parking charges over the course of 2 weeks ( different if only staying a few nights). So we booked the desert rose. We had a 1 bed apt each. I have to say that they were very good. The apt’s had everything you would need, a living room, kitchen really comfy bed.
The actual complex though was just ok. Check in area was quite nice with a bar and seating area. But if you ever think of staying there be prepared to be hounded for a few days from the timeshare folks. We found them to be very rude when the realised we were not interested in anything they had to say, to the point that we had our info about the resort thrown at us. We just threw it back! We don’t need any info. And the only reason we had any interaction with them is that you need to get your parking permit from their desk.

A couple of days into the trip we headed off on a mini road trip. 1- to show our friend a bit more than Vegas and 2- for the boys to get some golf in.

1st stop Palm Springs. We love it here. Stayed at the Caliente Tropics for 1 night and it was good for 1 night stay. We were awake really early on the Tuesday morning and felt this rumble with the building shaking about 4.50am. Turns out it was an earthquake. They had been getting rumblings and this one came in at 4.5. First time I have ever felt this. Weird is the only was to describe.

2 nd stop San Diego. Stayed the night at Humphreys Half Moon Inn. What a lovely hotel. We were in San Diego to go to the baseball as we love Petco Park. It was an amazing night as usual.

3 rd stop Phoenix where we stayed just south of the city at Wild Horse Pass. It was quite a nice hotel with a casino attached. The casino was really smoky though. It’s amazing how much we notice this now compared to years ago. This was our first time in Phoenix. Not sure if I would go back.

The drives between them all were long but part of what made the trip so good, seeing the landscape and it just being a bit of an adventure.

We returned to Vegas on the thu of our first week.

The following day was my dh birthday and our wedding anniversary. We had decided we wanted to try Andiamo at The D. It was fab I couldn’t recommend it high enough. The food was delicious and the service great.

During the following week we did some of the touristy stuff that our friend wanted to do that we haven’t in the past as it’s not really our thing. We went to the Gold and Silver Pawn shop which was actually quite fun looking at the stuff. We also went to Counts Kustoms which he liked but , and I’m sure it’s just because we haven’t watched it , we found just ok. We also went to the Shelby museum for their free tour they do. We have done this before and it’s so interesting.

They played some amazing golf courses. I always tag along and ride in the golf cart as I love seeing the courses. ( I have actually started playing but only played 1 course as they were too difficult for me still).
I have to make a special mention of Wolf Creek in Mesquite which was just stunning.
We also went through the valley of fire on the way home from Wolf Creek which was stunning.

I must also mention how much of a buzz there was in the city around the Vegas Knights ice hockey team. Talk about a place getting behind a team, amazing. We loved that they were really supporting them and loved seeing the Statue of Liberty with her hockey shirt on!

We had a great 2 weeks, got loads of bargains at the outlets, ate some lovely food and generally reminisced about the various times we have been in the past.
We have come to the conclusion though that we think it will be a while till we are back, and when we do it will definatly be as part of a road trip and only for a few days. We just feel we have done Vegas now. I’m not downing it , it will always be special for us as we got married there and it was our first ‘big’ holiday abroad but it just doesn’t excite us as much as it used to anymore.
