Hhn
Do we really need to wait in a US holding area for ages or can we stay at IOA for a bit and turn up at HHN after opening (7ish)? We will have HHN express passes and aren't too bothered about squeezing in every single maze, as long as we get to see a few - just want to soak up the atmosphere.
Just feels like a waste of time being penned into one area while IOA is still open! |

I would personally always go in the holding area. The queues to get in at the front gate are crazy! I did it once and never again

Of course it's down to personal preference but I would avoid the outside queue if you can

You totally can turn up at opening, I personally am not mad about the holding areas as there is usually nothing to do and some have limited shade to standing around for over an hour isn't fun for me. I would go after opening but not long after opening (if you only have one night there), just maybe give it a half an hour for the queue to thin out.

Ah okay so the queues aren't all night long? That's fine for us! If IOA is open until 7 or 8 I'd much rather get some stuff done there rather than hovering about in Universal from 5!

The queues at the front are busy until about 8.30, as it takes a while for the waiting crowd to get through and then again for the post IoA crew to get in.
They have improved the holding pens no end, you can come over fairly late (i think as late as 5pm) on the Hogwarts Express and stay in Diagon Alley with everything open. Or our favourite - have a beer in Simpsons

We queued for an hour at the front gates a few years ago. We didn't get in until gone 8, it felt like such a waste. We usually grab a snack and a drink and sit in the holding area.
