I live 2 hours from Gatwick and 2 hours 20 from Manchester traffic dependent so either airport is game on!
I never sleep but just chill and relax coming back and having done shift work for so many years, I just pretend I'm adjusting my body clock to night shifts! I will never drive if I am too tired, more so with loved ones aboard but taking it easy, coffee and breaks it can be done. Having said that as it's just the two of you you could pop into the Yotel which can be booked by the hour yotel/en/hotels/london-gatwick-airport Located in the South Terminal, would be handy if you plan this and then drive back in the afternoon.

Another vote for the train. We travel back to North east and the drive can be a nightmare if not slept properly. I know to my own experience, even though you feel ok, it takes seconds to fall asleep and then crash into barriers. I was lucky only the car was written off. Never again, the train for us now

On a couple of recent cheeky trips I've used the train from Manchester as it's easier than trying to get from Glasgow airport to the train station ( Mr Salmond & Ms Sturgeon semi to,have forgotten the promised rail link from the airport to the main stations ) then just a 20 min ride home and a 5 min walk the drive home after a long flight no way just not worth it

There's a website dayuse that does Day rooms at Gatwick. Never used them but seems a good place to start. From past experience Novotel. And Hilton definitely do them... from memory the Ibis was about £35ish a year ago.
Much as I love Yotel ,they are very cramped so with a lot of luggage might be too small. Perfect for after Twilight check in going outbound though.I think if you needed to stick your bags in left luggage t wouldnt be too bad as it is very close to Yotel but with the charges might've just as cheap to get a day room at the Bloc or Hilton and keep your bags with you. Is it feasible to tack on an extra day? I know you just want to get home but we discussed this last time we flew from Gatwick. We drove up to Hampton Court and stayed in a hotel opposite. That day was a killer but we went for a walk along the river to keep us all awake, went for an early meal and had an early night. Next day we woke up and went into Hampton Court, stayed until about 3pm and then drove home. It was a lovely day as luckily the weather was beautiful. Not ideal but better than the thought of the long drive home after the flight!
We are going from Heathrow this time so will probably drive home but will take our time. Hubby can sleep on planes so will let him do that then drive home

We live an hour away from Manchester and are flying from Gatwick. We're hoping to do bag drop the night before and are staying at the Hampton by Hilton Gatwick hotel at the north terminal. We got a great price for 4 of us (£1,340 using some Avios points) and at the time Virgin and others were over £2k so it was a no brainer for us. Hubby is aware it will probably be a nightmare journey back up but he'll sleep on the plane.
