International driving permit?
Panic. Someone has just told us we need an international driving permit for driving a hire car in Orlando. I said I didn't think we did.
Please tell me I am right? |

The IDP was an ill-judged and possibly illegal piece of legislation that they tried to introduce about 4 years ago. It lasted a couple of days on the Florida Statute before it was removed.
If your D/L is in English that's all you need. Neither do you need a code from the DVLA to hire a car over there if someone ever mentions that to you as well. Nor do you need the paper counterfoil to the plastic card D/L - that was abolished nearly 2 years ago. Mick

Not that old chestnut again. You do NOT need an IDP for anywhere in America. (I thought we'd buried this one a few years back.) I repeat you do NOT need one for Orlando.
Funnily enough we are off to St Lucia in May. Its a constitutional monarchy of the UK and we do meed an IDP! Go figure. Edited at 11:59 AM. |

You just have to have either a photocard licence or if you have the old paper one, you much have photo ID with you, ie passport.
No IDL required.

Always worth checking these things before travelling somewhere you haven't been. The fun one we had was Japan. So many medicines are banned. I use Sudafed regularly but the drug in it is banned over there. I had to get a herbal substitute which didn't work half as well. It's like the 6 month validity on a passport. In some countries it is required and should you ever visit Russia you have to carry your passport with you at all times. They won't accept a photo driving licence as ID.
