Mobile Road trip in Canada question

Anyone who’s done a road trip around Vancouver and the Rockies, can you tell me whether you used credit cards at petrol stations without any problems. We always use cash to pay for fuel in the US but don’t really want to carry a lot of Canadian currency.

Do you just pay for the fuel you pump or do you have to pay up front like you do in US with cash. Or do you have to give them your card first while you do it. Sorry if it’s a dumb question but I’m paranoid about getting my card cloned (past experience)!

We paid after fuelling - I was a bit surprised as I'd always prepaid in USA. I guess it depends on the petrol station.
