Northern Lights...
Now, we have never done a cruise before... unless you count the Isle of Wight ferry.. my husband has a big birthday next year and I would like to surprise him wish a cruise to the Northern Lights...I’ve tried looking, but it’s a minefield out there...trying to keep a tight budget, so an inside cabin would be fine. So what companies should I look at, and roughly what price? Neither of us drink.
Many thanks for any replies.

Sadly I cant offer any cruise advise but just be aware that the northern lights can be very unpredictable.
I have seen them once when we went on a trip to see Santa and was being pulled on a dog sledge at the time. They were an amazing sight - once seen never forgotten I hope you get the cruise sorted BB

As others have said they are unpredictable. My sister lives in Finnish Lapland and I have visited approximately 10 times at various times of the year. I’ve seen them about 6 times, but sometimes not very bright.
Tui do Northern Lights flights several times a year. It’s about £250 and the take off from Gatwick, circle around above Scotland and return 3 hours later. Again it’s unreliable but it could be a cheaper option. |

As others have said, there are no guarantees of seeing the northern lights. Winter gives you your best chance but cloud cover is more likely. Cruises to locations where you are likely to see the northern lights are very limited in winter - the only regular ‘cruise’ would be Hurtigruten which is really a ferry service along the Norwegian coast - but they do market themselves as a cruise. The down side is they are a bit pricey.
We did see the northern lights from a cruise ship in September 2017 as we left Reykjavik on a transatlantic (Southampton to NY via Iceland and Canada) but it was just good luck. |

P&O run specific Northern Lights cruises (obviously no guarantees!) but they are on the pricy side if you want a balcony cabin.
