Feel for those at Honda. I’ve been through 2 factory closures and giving 2 years notice makes it worse because it is like a slow death. A lot of the happiness and vibe gets sucked out of the place. Also colleagues leaving in dribs and deans and a permanent succession of leaving do’s is depressing.

The Turkish plant only produces around 20k vehicles per annum and are the saloon variant that is old in small numbers in EU.
The free trade with Japan including autos is where the problem for the uk is, the vast majority of Japanese auto manufacturers are here in the uk and the models that are produced here are global models ie built in more than one place. For economies of scale putting more volume through plants is better for the business, Toyota in my eyes would be a concern following this news as volumes are modest and now no reason to worry about 10% import. Just my view but you can see why Germany and France would be happy to have free trade on autos as no (minimal risk as France have a Toyota plant) risk to their jobs and factories. |

The Japanese free trade agreement with the EU and the death of diesel and huge investment needed for new technology has almost certainly killed Japanese car plant investment in the UK. Won't make one bit of difference if we even stay totally in the EU. I'd be surprised if Nissan etc is making anything here in 10 years.
Cheap labour in the former Eastern Bloc countries and large local grants paid to the likes of Jaguar to open new factories there, is doing it's best to mop up the rest. Unfortunately when it's owned by foreign companies such as Jaguar is by the Indians, they are not politically tied to the UK. Even with no Brexit, the Americans will be next I think. GM abandoned Vauxhall, already remember. Again the technology required for cleaner drive trains, and wages meant they decided they could not make money in Europe, never mind the UK. BMW is too integrated into German society and politically to shift everything out of Germany but even they are building a 1bn new plant in Hungary. Basically the production process needs totally altering for electric, big investment in new models and labour costs need to be reduced as much as possible.

Rolls Royce now moving part of business to the EU, if you can be bothered to look you’ll find a hell of a lot of firms doing this with loss of jobs in this country. This is all down to brexit. |

This is design 'approval' work to comply with EU legislation in the event of a no deal Brexit, and Rolls Royce have confirmed no jobs will be moved. Did you read the article?

As I stated before
Not every business closing is to do with Brexit Not every business opening is to do with Brexit There is, however absolutely no denying, and you would have to be living in fantasy land living off of Dole whipps to ignore that Brexit will have an influence on business decision, it will affect investments etc etc. Not so much because of Brexit but due to the incompetence of our politicians and there party leaders to behave in the interests of the country not Corbyn or May To negoatiate with knowledge a deal We have less than 35 days until we leave and people are still thinking that business should and can deal with th uncertainty So let’s put it this way You’ve already invested 6K going to Orlando. BUT you can’t book flights yesterday as you have heard that on the 1st April there might be an issue with flights entering the USA, do you sink another couple of grand on the off chance it’ll be alright on the night or do you wait and wait and then with 30 days to go yonthink. Nah going to rebook, go elsewhere It’s basic business acumen. Others will come and invest because they will be the ones picking up the scraps. As another aside. IF as many have said this has been coming for such a long time and as we know trade deals take years to come throug so the U.K. must have known abot the EU Japanese Trade Deal Shame it wasn’t mentioned by either side in the campaign. Might have focused a few minds especially in areas where they are so reliant on the car industry. But no, we were going to have the easiest trade deals i history. Still no point in crying over spilt milk. I feel so sorry for those affected, there are going to be tough times ahead for so many people. |
