We always fly hand luggage only - so stress free.

Buy toiletries airside or at destination (usually airside and then don't have to worry about getting to shops)

Don't just automatically go for 100ml bottles for everything, a 50ml bottle takes up half the space and is still plenty of product for a lot of items. Also switch products out for solids where you can, as you can pack these separately. Stick deodorant instead of roll-on/spray, make-up wipes instead of remover, etc. Take double duty items, e.g. tinted moisturiser/BB cream instead of day cream plus foundation.

Also a travel perfume sprayer (I use the Travalo brand) is a game changer - it's the size of a lip balm but more than enough for a week. Comes empty and you just refill with your favourite perfume, I've been using mine for years. Even the travel sized perfume bottles are bulky in comparison.

I can easily take everything I need for a week and still meet the liquids requirement. If at a push, I'll leave out things like shower gel (the hotel one is always adequate) and sun cream, which I'll buy airside or on arrival depending on destination.

The OP didn't say they had a lot of products.

They said, "Looks like I need shampoo, conditioner, sun cream and body and face moisturisers as a minimum that's 5 bottles". Those take up very little room in hand luggage and will easily fit into the clear plastic bag.

Whenever I've been away I've taken small bottles of shampoo, shower gel, and face wash, a roll-on deodorant, small tube of toothpaste and maybe sometimes a small tube of moisturiser. Those take up very little room - I could fit them all in a coat pocket if I really wanted to.

No, not at all. Plenty of people take more and have no trouble fitting them into their hand luggage.

You won't be taking full-sized bottles - either 50ml or 100ml - so they'll take up very little room. I could carry that amount in one hand.

Now, shoes... well, that's a different matter.

To be fair, I've never flown on holiday to Europe with an airline that charges extra for hold luggage. We usually get a package holiday and hold luggage is included for free. So we use it.

It's only with work that I've flown with just hand luggage. And usually I'm only away for 2 to 4 nights. Plus I'm a bloke so usually travel lighter.

Well I'm not a bloke but I don't use makeup and soap was good enough for granny's face so it's good enough for me (and soap doesn't count, being solid)
Where do I get the required plastic bag? Do I get given one at the airport?
I've just gone through my needs and my sunscreen spray is 100ml anyway and everything else I can decant into small tubes

You can get them at the airport at the liquids warning point prior to entering security, but the small (around 20x20cm) resealable freezer bags are the right size if you want to pack it in advance. Any supermarket should have own brand ones.

I use a ziplock bag from home bargains, slightly under the size but easy to cram everything in and I’d rather go prepared than try and fit everything in at the airport
Primark sell sets with the mini bottles in a suitable bag for £1.50, I always use these bottles
