I was in the Civil Service and could take 3 weeks off as it was a large office and they allowed 4 people off at any one time. I am now retired. DH is a self employed joiner so can come and go as he pleases, so 3 weeks not a problem for us.

i'm now a SAHM so no worries on taking holidays, DH is a police officer and as they do shifts it normally works out 3 weeks easily using 2 weeks annual leave. They very often also have their days off cancelled for things like court, public order etc so these get banked and can be used to bulk up any annual leave. We've only done 3 weeks once so far but planning another 3 week one next year.

Lots of jobs have some kind of limitations.
Notationally I'm supposed to get special permission for more than two weeks off together but it's usually granted whereas my husband has pretty much free rein but as his company shuts down over Christmas and New Year three weeks plus that leaves little AL left so it isn't ideal either. I know people in similar roles to yourself who can't take holiday the last few days of the month for reconciliation reasons but two weeks out of each month seems excessive. Retail often has restrictions in leave from November to January and lots of people struggle to get three weeks in school holidays in all sorts of jobs as it is allocated on seniority and the "old timers" grab August whether they have kids or not. You certainly aren't alone in not finding it easy to get. |

I work for a Japanese bank so I have to take at least 10 consecutive days each year due to FSA regulations so adding another 5 really isn’t an issue. Mr D is self employed and has his own cafe so normally for a 21 day holiday he’d let his staff stay open for 10 days and then close the cafe for the rest of the time.

I worked for various companies in the Oil and Gas energy sector, and never had any problems taking holidays as long as you gave the company fair warning. In 1995 we had five weeks in California, I advised them a year before and they agreed to me clubbing holiday entitlements for two years and taking one week unpaid. This still left me with a few days to take for unplanned stuff, Xmas etc.

Two weeks isn’t excessive really. The US parent dictates our reporting requirements and there’s an enormous number of additional reports I have to prepare. I also have to do monthly reports to the bank, insurers and HMRC plus the salaries have to be done before I go. In previous companies I’ve had the luxury of a 15 day reporting period but also the limitations of a 3 day period that required us working until 10 at night. You just have to do what’s necessary to report on time as the parent companies have their onward reporting to the ultimate owners.

I’m a civil servant and DH is a teacher - I’d have to ask in advance but it’s usually ok - my sister works in a bank and has to go high up to get special permission (see my other thread) x

I work as a Finance Administrator. I also have no one to do my work whilst away. I have to ensure I have as much sales as possible processes and then anything else ready to go. I also do the wages early so there is no problem there. This year I have incorporated the August bank holiday too. The first few days home will be mental but it's worth it!

I'm NHS and DH is in pharmaceuticals. As long as we have cover we can all for and I usually get 3 weeks.

I’m a finance officer in a school so off for the summer, however the work doesn’t stop for me when schools shut so I tend to go in the first week of the holidays and then another day or two just before we go.
We’ve done 3 weeks the last 4 years and I’d be reluctant to give it up now. Dh is a fund analyst and has no problem getting 3 - 3.5 weeks as long as it isn’t over his busiest time. This year dd and I will travel ahead and dh will join us later. We’ll get almost 5 weeks 😀 |
