My husband was dignosed just after new year with type 2 diabetes just after new year, and he too is trying to reverse it with a strict diet at the moment we are all on 800 calories a day diet and this can fluctuate between 800 and 900 calories most days and we seem to be doing quite well but it is boring,we mostly fill up on veggies and make vegetable based meals, vegeterian chilli, and veggie soups etc.keep at it,it does get easier but the problem is boredom with food choice. But the scales telling us that we have all lost over a stone each in 4 weeks is a good incentive to keep going

Then I decided to go on a low carb diet and lost 4 stones in about 15 months. My HbA1c measurement dropped to within the normal non-diabetes range. GP said if I kept it up I could reduce my dose. I’m due to see him in a couple of months.

I’ve been naughty and put on 10lbs in the past 6 months. I have my review with diabetic nurse specialist tomorrow and dreading it.

I’m determined to start eating properly again, the benefits far outweigh the pleasures of eating chocolate.

I’ve had a lot of help from my GP and nurse, they arranged for me to see a diabetes dietician and to attend a course covering different aspects. GP also referred me to our local leisure centre with free membership (3 or 6 months I can’t remember). I made full use of pool, gym and classes. Fallen off the wagon there too, need to climb back on.

Don’t panic. It’s do-able! Your hubby will need to accept that he needs to change his eating habits though. Also you can helpby reading food labels - there’s hidden sugar in the most unexpected items.

SORRY To go on a bit, hope you’re still awake !
Thanks so much for taking the time to share that 😀

He has an appointment in 2 weeks to discuss it. It's encouraging to hear your nearly at normal levels again.

I feel so sorry for him as he loves food 😂 he is going to have to learn to eat vegetables and salads and leave off bread.

A stone in 4 weeks is brilliant 😀
I just need to get learning some healthy recipes that he will eat as I don't think it will last otherwise

I still eat tasty curries but instead of rice I have roughly-mashed steamed cauliflower. It absorbs the curry sauce and is delish, I actually prefer it to rice.

My husband is type 2, and as an air traffic controller he has to keep his levels down otherwise he loses his medical and can't work. A lot of the time he follows the Blood sugar diet, but when we are on holiday we go out for breakfast, don't normally have lunch, but may have a cake or ice-cream, and then go out for tea, and to be honest it doesn't seem to affect his average levels, he has to get a test for work every 3 months which shows the average over the last 8 weeks. I think it is the sheer amount of walking we do on holiday offsets the food a little bit. I know everybody is different, but it means he can eat what he wants for a few weeks while on holiday.

Hey there,

I have been diagnosed for about 7 years now, but I feel like being a young person they (gp/doctors) don't want to help, I was seeing a community diet nurse once every 3 months, that lasted 4 sessions & never seen her again, never asked for a food diary & frankly they seem to think I can manage myself but with my bloods averaging 10-11 for the past 30 days its not doing great,

I complained I had a rush of blood feeling down my leg, they took blood but when I asked for the results I just got a "make an appointment", took me4-5 weeks just to get the nurse appointment to start with, useless..

I just adjust my metformin as I see fit these days, doesn't seem to be working all that good.

think I initially lost 2 stone over 7 months (wedding) but that just went back on over the following couple of years.

Have you thought about Slimming world? I've been going for a while now and it's completely changed the way I eat and cook and I don't really feel I'm missing out on much? There's tricks and substitutions you can learn so you can still have a treat , just healthier? A friend I've made there was type 2 diabetic, had high blood pressure amongst other issues! She's lost 5 stone in 10 months and is now free from needing diabetes or blood pressure medication at all? She was referred by her GP, and got 12 weeks free at SW and 12 weeks free personal training at a gym? She says it's changed her life! Might be worth asking uou6r GP?

She went to Dubai at Christmas for a month and only put on 3lbs so its doable?

Its not easy being a meatatarian as I don't eat any veg / salad, purely protein / meat diet,

I would not last on 800 cals a day, that's just my breakfast I kid you not.. & that's cut back to blackpudding, eggs & a sausage, no beans as that's lots of carbs & sugar.
